USA standards

Thats easy then, if US importers supply hormone fed beef to the UK no one will buy it and they'll all stop bothering bringing it here.

More likely that the people campaigning to stop it are worried that actually quite a few people would be quite happy to eat it, if its cheaper than the current alternative, and it'll put them out of business.

I think GM produce will be a big issue, I saw some videos on the Brazil beef industry and to be totally honest they had super looking stock, fantastic cattle handling and all auto idea on massive scale, I happily eat it. Like everywhere there are some good and poor farmers in every country. I could us as a country letting cheep food in the door, so we started organic Converstion bit over 12 months ago to try and different our selves, who knows if it right or wrong decision.

Just looks like an anti Brexit piece to me, suggesting everyone's doomed if a deal is done with America. If there was a trade deal with the US and hormone or GM was still not allowed, American farmers could and would just supply non GM or hormone free, whatever the market wants really. Bringing standards closer together just makes it easier that's all.
Had many a good steak when I lived in America, not so much in the UK, or here come to think of it.

Cant get my head round why anyone would be against GM food to be honest.

We already import a lot of GM foodstuffs, have done for must be nearly 20 years now. The EU merely ban the cultivation of crops with GM traits, I am not sure why but keeping the Americans at arms length is one of their priorities.

Antibiotic growth promoters are just bad news and need to be banned worldwide in my book.

How are modern growth hormones used these days, are they still delivered in implant form? Assuming you can remove the implant some weeks prior to slaughter, any trace of growth hormone would be long gone surely? All the human studies I have read relating to the administration of exogenous hormones of all kinds indicates a half life in the blood/body of basically minutes before they are undetectable.

If you have to find the best clippers to cut off the ''tags'' before they go to slaughter it says a lot. Our country has the same since cattle, crap and mud cause problems for all producers of beef. As far as the implants are concerned not everyone uses them but they have a time period that they are good for up to 120 days. As for the hormone aspect, it is naturally occurring in almost all beef.

The feed lots I have seen in three different continents were in regions where it was so hot and dry the cattle stayed very very clean. It is a different game trying to achieve the same in the UK since cattle have to be under a roof for the winter in many parts of the country but I know people who rear beef on a variety of scales and they seem to manage fine- dirty cattle do not impress slaughter houses and I am sure the same is true in the USA.

You will find a large portion of our cattle are fed in the upper plains states and the Midwest. Cattle on feed do much better in the cold than in the hot and dry. The problem with those feed-yards is rain and mud which drives up feed costs.
