Using Dyna 6

I would appreciate some insight into how to get the best out of the transmission on the 6480 we have just acquired, from seasoned users please.
I mean from a practical hands on user perspective. I have scanned the handbook, but a pointer from someone well versed is probably better than reading1000 words.
Thought there might be something on YouTube, but the one by the chap from Massey at Stoneleigh cuts off just as it gets interesting.
Thank you.

Before the duck comes along, please guide us with a couple of answers:-

Does it have an autodrive dial?
Is it single or multi-user, and are they the type to want to exploit functionality or just get on and drive?

The fact that these questions need asked demonstrates both the strength and weakness of the user interface.

as above if it has the auto drive dial i set this to the left slightly, this gives speed matching between gears for road work and you just push the t bar forward, or the shuttle lever forward to go up a gear no clutch required, only to set off works lovely took me a while to discover this though :ROFLMAO:

First thing to do is to set your preferred start gear on the dot matrix screen, and also the shuttle aggressiveness setting. Knowing how to adjust these to the job you are doing really helps.

Thanks chaps, yes got the rotary dial, no I'm not really interested in the Datatronic 3 screen stuff at the moment, just want to know the correct and sympathetic way to drive particularly corn carting next job.
Been doing a bit of topping  to get a feel for shuttle and basics. Did work out that the speed matching 1 click to the left, enables you to just hold T bar forward and up it shifts in sequence, and how to preset start gear.
I appreciate the input.
TR250 thanks, I will do that. Will send you a picture of daughters sheepdog pup for you to see..

You'll need 2 start off gear settings. One for loaded and one for empty if hauling trailers.

Then some idiot will be stopped at a junction with foot on clutch and finger on button on side of T bar and reset it to 1B. Then they'll pull out going through all gears then they'll change ranges and stall. Then a motorbike will come and almost run into the side of it.

God I miss that gearbox. There isn't anything wrong with it, but its definitely not idiot proof. Treat the range changes like a gear change. I can't remember what mode it is. But it's better in mode where you have to press button on side of t bar to change range. The automated range changes are dangerous in the wrong hands.

Dynashift with a gearstick much better in my opinion.

i get what you mean an unsympathetic diver can really hurt it but now ive got my head round it i really love it,

best tip as you say it treat the main range changes (1-4) as proper changes, to be fair mine does do them nice and smooth even hauling 14 tonne of muck uphill but im mindful to be carful.

the power quad is idiot proof, but the dyna 6 is a much nicer box to use.

I have one side of the dial set to either 3A or 3B and the other side set to 3C and switch the rotary dial between them depending if it’s an empty tractor or loaded with trailer at a junction.
Me similar but way down to 1D on the RHS so I can quickly access slow speeds for the diet feeder.

In general, the same as most it appears - one nick left of centre for most jobs, and don't touch the range button. If pulling hard use one nick to the right to avoid unexpected range changes and a broken nose. The start off gears are the most common source of frustration, especially when 'dad' gets on and all hell breaks loose. There is a setting to make it more difficult to change them inadvertently, but I couldn't get my dealer to understand which box to tick.

Why?
Well you’ll stop at the roundabout and dip the clutch as you approach, even if you are still rolling pretty well and realise you don’t need to stop and can carry on full send it’ll have dropped back down too your start gear automatically, so 3B… then you’ll work your way through the gears by 3G your half way out in the middle of the road revving the pansy so hard even the Irish would be proud… you then go in deep for the range change hoping and praying it’s a fast one and all of a sudden you find yourself out in no mans land rolling out across the island in what feels like a scene from the matrix because everything slows down that much while a bunch of African migrants shovel as much coal into the boiler as possible waiting for the gears too engage because by the time it’s in your gonna need all the steam she’s got too get rolling again before an Eddie stobbarts wagon driver on the phone side swipes your trailer

😂😂😂😂😂 can have a similar experience when you’re running along side a forager and hit a steep clip or vice versa a light row in middle if a field!! Saying that, a NH power command can do funny things aswell and sometimes decides to boil the kettle and make a brew before changing gear! Guaranteed to cover your drawbar, back end and roof with grass and make you look like a 🍋

Had a 6480 on demo and couldn’t get on with the D6, it was 3.5 k more for a 7480 at the time , money well spent I think, simple to use and pretty much fool proof, can’t understand how they sold more D6’s than dynaVT’s.

As at the time probably most didn’t know of the benefits of driving the VT let alone the increased reliability of the whole back end…..
