value of cows in france

Got 30 something to go away soon. Summer 2018 they were up around £1200 but sure last lot that went away in backend weren't much over 1k.

Just put them to local mart. Slaughter house taken over by kepak and they've started taking cows.

What price are you getting for cull cows?
I’ve not sent anything for a while as dairy been flooding markets but your cows should be that £1200 a dealer I used to do a bit with always told me February was the month for cows there’s a good market in Belgium for cows also

Do farmers still do the once bred heifers, I believe the term was Genisse when they were finished?
I seem to remember that the meat from Genisse was considered some of the best by specialist butchers.


A genisse is a heifer so that doesn't include any that have calved. It is a practice but not very common. Genisse is the highest carcass price and there are several specs. Our large ones are classed as "lyon's" if they make over 400kg carcass. I assume the name comes from being popular in that city.

Do your clean cattle get a weight cap or not?

Was there not a specific name for the once bred heifers that were sought after?
Seem to remember these were well over 400kg and ate really well, I think they were about 4 years old.

Not that I know of.
We have done some (when we didn’t like the first calving performance for eg) and nothing has ever been made of it. We do have to sign a certificate for the heifers though.

I have often heard that our blonde cull cows are worth a lot more in France than here in NI. Maybe the difference is not as bit as I was lead to believe - a carcass worth 3000euro?
Many blonde carcass are exported to Holland.

To answer the op question, any time a uk buyer tries to buy pedigree cattle in France it is prohibitively expensive.

Not really, we imported 20 odd saler heifers a few years ago. Cheaper than we could have bought them here, they were suffering a forage crisis and very hard winter and wanted to offload livestock.

Wouldn't want to do it now due to blue tongue.

Did you cull those french cows ok as I had some lim cows bought in this country but french ear tags weren’t the easiest to get rid of because of those tags

Well no, a fat cow should be worth 1600/1800, you could get real heaven ones to 2k (we did some 3 and a half year heifers at 1950) and that is basically the rate for breeding cows. Of course, a good cow 8 months pregnant with her 3rd calf is going to be the best part of 2 K
Also, are they Inscrit or Commercial? If Inscrit are they ALL papered HBL or only some?
What's the health status? Indemnified IBR, BVD, TB,EBL, Varron Etc.?
