Value of wood chips as soil conditioner/fertiliser

Sounds like your heading for a large fine disposing of waste with no control of the woodchip run off.
Its not classed as waste (I think) because it is being used. Certainly tree surgeons can cart it without a waste licence, but unchipped hedge cuttings are a different matter.

I have used a fair amount under the cattle bedding over the years and find it dissapears in the muck. I feel it helps with drainage, and if it gets a bit stodgy around the ring feeder, a bucketful levels things out.

I have seen shavings from stables tipped in gateways, but it is a very temporary solution because they get churned into the soil and it holds even more water.

Read the legislation and get the correct exemptions from the environment agency. Think at the last count where running with 15 exemptions. Trickiest bit is keeping within the storage limits and duration of storage as the quantities are very small.
