VAT recording get-out clauses

You do realise that those fines won’t go away, whatever you thoughts on the system? I would respectfully suggest that you need to get this sorted out ASAP.

I know someone who lost his business (council dairy farm tenancy), his solvency and consequently, his marriage, over thinking he could ignore bills from another institution that always gets their money, in his case a Water Co.

All done by the book. Complaint logged within 28 days as per vat notice.Already notified that returns are actually nil returns.

reckon I will just stick with the worshippers of the Fornicating Heathens and cash looks like the only way to avoid all this crap

Always nice to meet a fellow believer. Although I am a member of the Godless Heathen barstewards myself...

can remember the fuss when dad had to order tags in order to do his first TB test, we survived that along with brucellosis testing, mapping the farm, keeping records for the vat , all hurdles encountered and overcome with perserverence

It's not only the software but the monthly fee that I object to.

I tried QBooks a few years ago and the pain in entering the vat amount as per invoice made me pack it in. I just want to enter the amount shown on the invoice, which is not always the exact percentage of the amount paid.

Wise words ! You will never beat the system it's far better to adapt to it and as an earlier post said once done you will wonder why you didn't before

Just swapped from Sage to QuickBooks, and after a quick tutorial from the accountant I can see it will be much quicker and more accurate for me to use.Once its all set up it should be cheaper as it will need very little input from the accountant, they are charging £10/mth for it.

Don’t mention the word “sage” to my mother... it’s giving her nightmares at the minute

Hear lots of farmers complaining about this. Luckily, our accountant has always done the vat return, so no change for us. Would some of you not just let your accountant do it, and enjoy doing a bit more farming?

I'm currently speaking to a guy who has set up a server that talks to the HMRC server so that small businesses can set up an account with him, upload a file (which can be easily derived from an existing spreadsheet system) and his server will then upload that to HMRC in the right format and get the correct receipt etc. He's planning to charge £20/yr for a single VAT number (quarterly returns), and I think a fiver per extra number, or something like that.

The beauty of such a system being if you run a spreadsheet system you can go on doing so without moving over to a full accounting package, and not having to pay their fees either. Works with Excel or Open Office, other spreadsheets may work too.

Its a bit clunky at the moment and not exactly the most user friendly site for non-IT minded people, but it does seem to work, he set me up with a test account and I have (after a bit of trial and error and a fair few emails asking questions) managed to successfully upload a test return to the HMRC's test server (which they are providing for people to test their software on) from my spreadsheet system. So I'm fairly hopeful come next April I will be able to file my 3 different VAT returns online, for no more than £30 per year.

If anyone fancies a look its here:

https://www.vat.direct/

What I like about it is that its one guy programming it himself, and he replies to email questions, or at least does at the moment, if it takes off he might not be so responsive! He is listed on the HMRC list of approved MTD software providers, as Cirrostratus Exedra, here:

I don't think de-registering is the way to go, every indication is that the Treasury are looking at reducing the VAT registration threshold considerably, to a far lower amount like maybe £10-20k, so that hobbies and micro businesses can be exempt, but no one is going to be able to run a business at an income level to live on without being in the system. The UK's VAT threshold is the highest in the EU I think, most are about half ours, some as low as 10k euros.
