Vertical milk silo Vrs horizontal tank

Anyone wishing to comment on the above. I'm told vertical tanks have less surface area for the evaporators so slightly less efficient. Also agitator paddle is under more stress due to its length but I see plenty of people now opting for outdoor silos. The cost of constructing a bigger tank room has made me look at outdoor vertical silos.

Space is the main reason for a silo.
You are correct about cooling although you can opt for more vertical cooling when you spec up a silo. However, I would recommend a snap chiller as it would be easier to fix if it goes wrong.
By using a chiller & plate cooler, we have milk going in to our silo at around 6 deg or less so there is not much cooling that the silo needs to do.

BUT do specify sufficient cooling on the silo (if you go for one) to enable it to cool milk quickly enough if other methods go tits up - and they do

Re Paddle. They are much more robust and to date, we have yet to have a problem. I would be more concerned about trying to service the wash ball TBH

You don’t have to put a tank in a room, only the wash plant and connection point , tank can be outside, a lot cheaper than a silo

I wanted a horizontal alot cheaper than a silo. Just didn't have the room for one inside the tank room and the footprint outside was huge. So went with a silo and really pleased with it. Think it's alot cleaner outside too with all the rain on it cleaning it. Cooling was alot better than i thought if i'm really honest.
