Vet call out charges

As far as vet bills go,it is a bit of a lottery though isn't it? My spaniel jumped a barbed fence and gashed her belly open about six inches long. Old vet numbed it and stitched her up,the bill was £20. New neighbours dog jumped one of our fences chasing a ball last week and did the same thing but only half the cut. New vet insisted on full anaesthesia etc .......£250

Pretty sure as a large animal client I don’t pay the same as the pet customers for my dogs occasional visits

I always speak to my vet before treatment. Normally we can sort out a more cost effective course of action for dogs. They are perhaps too used to dealing with insured pets or owners with bottomless pockets?

I wouldn't call a vet out for a sheep. I've taken them to the surgery before, for diagnosis etc.

Ours are on hourly fee no call out.
Think their clocks run slow though! Had one out the other week to a heifer with a broken leg. Ended up being a casualty slaughter, so rang the local abbatoir whilst vet was washing up. They said they would set off straight away so vet decided to wait for the slaughter man. Bill came the other day, vets time was less than the time we were stood waiting for the slaughter man!

I’ve just sent some sheep to Russia, as part of a consignment. I filled all the paperwork in as much as I could, ready for the vet (who had done that course), as it was just simpler that way.

Our vet has banded call out charges, which I think is a great idea as my nearest gateway is about 150m from the surgery. Hourly rate is the same wherever you live though.:(
I do try to pop most sheep round to the surgery though, in order to at least save the call out, as well as utilise whatever subsidised health programs I can.
what the hell had they done to you

Not enough critical mass unfortunately where you are. There are a few covering your area but they will have to travel.
yes I realise that so the animal suffers while who ever gets there credit card out ( have to pay up front ) just to get someone to come out if they will at all its getting so that vets don't care about the animal just their bank balance

steady on. That’s a big leap. Why should a vet lose money because your not willing to pay more? Everyone is entitled to a living and animal welfare is your responsibility. If think the cost of keeping animals is to great for you then don’t have them.

whoa you steady on thats not what i'm saying and it s not me who is having the issues so wind your neck in . vets are entitled to get payed for what they are worth but the service you get isn't always that great and waiting times for an injured animal can be ridiculous if a vet has to travel a great distance this all ads up to suffering I suppose you think that people with poor vet coverage should stop keeping animals

My reply is in response to how your post reads. Apologies if I took it the wrong way, I didn’t think it was your usual sentiments, however it reads like a common thing I hear.
I understand what you are saying about travelling time. However very few calls that you get as an emergency genuinely happened the minute the farmer called, i.e cow calving all night and now needs a Caesar or the farmer returns to fine the beast with the broken leg. But yes if the animal keeper is not satisfied they can get a suitable vet in a reasonable time then they should query keeping livestock. I don’t see how that is the vets fault.
