It’s because 95% of students will never touch a sheep once they qualify. Is it not due to being able to guarantee the safety of the students.
Call it woke if you like but it’s similar to when the grain trade stopped sending sampling girls
Not sure, I read it as all, but you may be right. Is it just Bristol though? Apart from Surrey they’ve always seemed hard to deal with somehow if I need students I ring various unis to give them my dates and Bristol just never seem interested
True .. Iv never bothered with a student again after I got one that was terrified of sheepIt’s because 95% of students will never touch a sheep once they qualify.
I had to work at a cattery for a week and empty litter trays. Absolute waste of time and I still hate cats!
I actually managed to make a fair bit of money through lambing, milking, even spent my pig ems mucking out sheds as they knew I could drive a telehandler.
Again maybe correct, from all our students we’ve had we have heard of horror stories of borderline abuse of their college mates at the hands of some places, of course bad news travels further than good news, but being demanded to do 18hr days and stay in a damp caravan with no meals provided or pay may be wearing thin with the powers that be. Of course I really hope and expect that’s in the minority but it could be a root cause of it ceasing. Is it not due to being able to guarantee the safety of the students.

They still have to do placements but not species specific. When I went through you had to do a total number of weeks and it was made up of dairy, lambing, horses, pigs, poultry and then cat or dog. Now you can do what you want. They still will be expected to pass animal handling exams and know the theory at uni.Again maybe correct, from all our students we’ve had we have heard of horror stories of borderline abuse of their college mates at the hands of some places, of course bad news travels further than good news, but being demanded to do 18hr days and stay in a damp caravan with no meals provided or pay may be wearing thin with the powers that be. It certainly was for sampling students the odd abusive/sexually dodgy and dangerous situations put a stop to alot of students going out.
Yes 95% of vets don’t touch a sheep again after placement but there is masses of transferable skills/knowledge if they are taught right, not just asked to muck out pens and bottle lambs for 2 weeks.
