Vet visits annually

There’s a scheme that’s been running in Wales for several years, called Stok+ , run by HCC.

We decide what issues we want to investigate and the funding covers a free Health & Welfare plan with the vet, as well as several visits & testing costs. This year we have investigated thin/cull ewes with testing for iceberg disease like Johnnes and ultrasound scanning for OPA (we already test for Mv, otherwise that would be included).

As you might imagine, all of the vet fees are used up completely, as will happen with this English scheme. Whilst the extra surveillance is interesting to do, I’m not convinced it makes particularly good use of public money, but then we are already fairly proactive with our vet.
No doubt vets, and their accountants, would argue that it’s great scheme though.🤐

we have bvd tests through farming connect as you say the only winners from this scheme will be the vets

Farming Connect is another, different source of funding to Stok+, and our vet is always very keen to make full use of both, for as many clients as possible. All coming out of the 15% kept back from the BPS budget.

The practice must be earning many thousands from these schemes already, much of it for work that wouldn’t normally be undertaken.

In exchange for said funding, we have to agree to upload our medicine usage to AHDB.
A clear analysis of medicine usage is important if we are to market ourselves to the international community. It's one thing to claim that we use less AB than some other nations but to have data to prove it is another matter. If we can also demonstrate a reduction over time that will be another string to our marketing bow

Nothing is for Nothing….on the face of it a good idea….but..
A year or two down the road, could it become a compulsory requirement…..at the moment according to the blurb outcomes between Vet and Farmer remain between them…not shared with Gov. etc.
Easy to see that being modified….and oh yes Gov is no longer paying the bill…
Anyone half serious about farming will already have a close relationship with their Vet….perhaps not in a written down format, RT of course dictates otherwise.
But on the face of it a good idea
