Hi all,
Anyone still using a Vicon wagtail fro spreading Fert on grassland. Anyone bought a new one recently ?
We used to run them for years before having a basic Kuhn disc spreader. Lots of small and awkward fields on 250 acres of grassland. Any thoughts welcome .

do you have any idea how to assemble the agitator/regulator plates ? I had to replace as rusted away on Vicon varispreader 800 there is a black ring/bush/ that appears to fit around the top red regulator plate but if fitted it prevents spreader fitting back together properly . I can’t make out where it should sit, just wondered if you or anyone had any idea or could help?

Apologies for the hijack
Looking to use the wag tail to sow some barley incorporating it as part of a grass reseed, helping to bulk the cut of silage from it.
Having never used it before I’m like a fish out of water regarding settings, speeds and widths.
I know it’s getting late in the season but for this part of the world I’m not too bad. Advised seed rate of 50kg/acre of barley and 14.5kg/Acre of grass.
some help would be greatly appreciated from fellow vicon users

Biggest issue, is that the grass seeds will not spread to 10-12m, I always spread at 6m for grass seeds. BUT the grain will wallop out full width. You can mix, but bear the above in mind when calibrating.

If want to go faster or slower, wider or narrower let me know and I'll put different figures into the app.

Sowed 100’s of acres of grass seeds with a Vicon with a 10 ft Cambridge roll behind, sowed the width of the roll so it was all covered twice, then cross rolled. Did a cracking job, sowed lots for neighbours etc and for local amenity ground too.

Am I mad to try and spin out some turnip seed with my wagtail? I have a 03 series, 1154. This isn't on the app. The closest thing was the Superflow. I put it in the app and it suggested that I should be driving at 33km/h!
I only have a small acreage to do. Can anyone give me a ballpark figure on what to setting to use so I don't drop all the seed out on the ground on the first run please?

Best bet is to mix it with some fert/ another larger granule, spread at the application rate of the fert and your turnips will be mixed in.
Just drive close, and drive round and round. I’ve never done it but have heard of it being done, seems as it would work fine?

As above, you have to mix it with the fert. Cut a small hole in the bottom of the bag so it runs slowly and scatter the seed by hand into the fert as it runs into the spreader.
Spread it at 12m and then go back over it again in between the first lot of wheel marks. So you're only spreading the fert at half the 12m rate you want, each time.

I ended up putting out straight seed, its well up and away now. With a little trial and error I managed to find a good calibration. With that little seed the margin between nothing and dumping the entire load is frighteningly small. I put out more than i wanted too but i didnt have to hire a drill. The seed was cheap enough and it's given me confidence to go with grass seed in the future.

I’ve only ever used a wagtail for grass seed, usually pull a set of seed harrows behind, basically just harrow the field cos it won’t throw it very wide.Never ever had any misses.
Set it on 15 on a new 1354 for about a 14kg bag an acre if anyone interested.

Did you use the blanking plates in the bottom of the hopper ?

I used to use a vicon but just like you bought a basic Kuhn disc spreader about 20 years ago. Now I use that for grass seed aswell as fertilizer. Why do you need a vicon aswell?

It’s been a long time since I’ve used one but if I remember you could blank each hole individually so for fine seed you just had one hole open and you could have this fairly wide so the seed would flow good . No they didn’t look like the ones in your picture
