VOIP over wifi

Ok, I have transferred my house number over from BT to a VOIP service and I am using "csip simple" as an app on my phone to take and make calls. We have wifi everywhere but so far the quality of service is poor, the calls break up and the sound is poor. I assume it is primarily to do with the wifi signal but I am able to use my tablet for browsing and video without any problem. Is there a minimum wifi specification that is needed for effective VOIP?

Thanks @Pheasant Surprise
So the lower the ping the better?
Yes lower is always better with ping times. It’s a measure of round trip delay for data packets across the network from your computer to another.

What kills VoIP is really high ping times and also a high “jitter” measure. Jitter is the variation in ping times.

Really high ping and jitter times are usually symptoms of a poor quality connection to the exchange (or now cabinet in a lot of cases).
