Volkswagon emissions scandal

In the US the attitude is claim and the government back this to the hilt, in fact they have given VW a very hard time.. Mercedes have also been taken to task over inherent wiring failures on rear lights. Such claims are not supported in the EU to the same extent. I wonder why?

Err, the US government don't like VW or other German car makers as they are stealing US automakers market share. Stabbing VW for a few billion is AOK by them.

A TDI Golf in the USA? A car that can do 50mpg. Heresy!

There is a class action against VW thats progressing in the UK courts.

The US is a different proposition as they actively promoted their diesel as clean.

If you have a genuine interest there is a documentary on Netflix called "Dirty Money" and it discusses the VW case and what they did to promote after they we caught. #spoiler# they set up two parralel cages and pumped VW emmisions into 1 and a massive Ford pick up's into the other, with a living primate in both.

i don't think many vag customers are worried about the scandal.....they'll just take the money and buy another vag
Not necessarily. I'm part of the class action against VW currently going through the courts because I bought one of their dirty emissions cheaters when it was being touted as one of the cleanest diesels on the market. I won't buy another VAG car after this is over.

We've been told we may get half our money back. I'm thinking of buying a horse.

Our solicitors sent out letters to all customers about this claim, must be some 5+ years ago, they were working with a major law firm to chase VW in the UK.

I returned the letter with details of our a car A diesel Golf, I never heard anymore about it, we updated our wills 2 years ago, while there I asked what had happened, turned out the woman dealing with had since left and no-one else had taken the job on.

Then there appeared on a Faceache group a law firm asking for details, I contacted them and said we no longer owned the vehicle, didn't matter as long as you can give us details of the car, I'd no longer got the original invoice or any other paperwork with VIN details, and the dealership has been taken over twice since and they were no help.

I've given up any hope of getting anything back.

Slater and Gordon. You're too late to sign up to the current class action (closing date for joining the list was about 18 months ago) but if we're successful the floodgates will open for all the other claim companies who were previously processing PPI claims and are looking for something to do. It's going to take until next year at least for any resolution though.

The ambulance chasers will be getting excited because over the summer, despite VW going to the Court of Appeal, the judge has decided there is a case to answer and that they fitted emissions test defeat devices in 1.2 million UK vehicles.

Now they have to defend claims for 'liability and loss' and will get their chance to do this in early 2021. Watch this space...

Yep, to file a claim as part of the class action you didn't have to still own the car but had to show proof of purchase.

But all manufacturers have cheated on areas, like rolling road mpg figures. Now stopped from that mpg tests are done with mirrors removed shut lines taped up etc. I just think that people will jump on the bandwagon of claiming (and i don't blame them if its made easy) when the planet was probably the last thing on their mind when buying a new vehicle.

Not really, VW pleaded guilty to this, I had a letter from Ford at the time assuring me despite any rumors like you are promoting they didnt have to cheat to keep their engines clean, I would have thought they would keep their heads down if they had to cheat to make a car.

My family had five Hyundais in recent years. Never a complaint other than a lack of refinement. They build good cars but not at the cutting edge of technology. I think they will be world beaters eventually.

Brother in law has a garage and he has spoken well of them and said they are one of his favourites to work on. It seems some thought has gone into making a car for the mechanics and not just the guy behind the steering wheel.

My Daughter's got an Hyundai ix35, had it 7 years, only problem is the tyre pressure monitor is a real pain the arse, keeps giving false alarms every now and then. Then she turns up here "dad can you look at my tyres".

Rose tinted specs view imho. Vw were caught out and yes were probably pushing things a step further than others but all manufacturers got a waken up from this. The manufacturers are no different from the salesmen in what they want the consumer to believe and will push things as far as they can achieve it. Re ford, see how many transit customs have been re-mapped to make sixth gear usable as its far too high geared and way below where the power and torque of the engine is rpm wise at legal speed limits (economy figures are good though if you could use it)

Please excuse me for asking what is possibly a daft question but is there any reason she can't check her own tyre pressures/treads and fix them as necessary?

It's not the treads she want's checking, just the pressures "but that's what dads are for isn't it, loving us and fixing things", and of course I've got a compressor here.

A worm has more mechanical nous than her husband.

I feel hard done-by now. I don't remember ever getting a result with the 'lovely fixing things daddy' speech, just didn't wash with him.

As soon as I passed my test my dad had me changing tyres and bulbs; checking oil, water, treads and pressures; faffing about with jump leads and battery chargers etc. He said if I was going to take a machine on the road by myself I should know how to do running repairs, regardless of being a girl. I was annoyed at the time but now I'm grateful as it's stood me good stead over the years.
