Voter ID

I think the only reason for a postal vote should be illness, if I choose to go on hols etc, that is my choice to disenfranchise myself (as I chose to do with the pole tax).
I think to be fair it is only right that people whose job takes them away from home or those who have just moved house and not been included on the new electoral roll should be allowed one too as I believe was the case until fairly recently.

Disagree, for the reasons I have put above. Why should the likes of offshore workers be penalised?

must admit I didn't think of offshore workers, however, I feel it is far too easy and open to cheating at the moment.

HGV drivers. Those working 'on the road' away from their residence for the election Thursday. If you like I can rattle off half a million or more who cannot easily attend the polling station.

They used to say in Norn eirland, . Vote early and vote often.
I think thats why you need ID.
A couple of centurys ago a war was fought for< No taxation without representation>
should also be no representation without taxation.
So those who dont pay tax shouldnt vote. (Pensioners have paid in advance)
Gosh - you old bleeding heart liberal you!

I dont have an issue with voter ID but it must be free to those who do not have things like passports and driving licences.
When we have polls which Europeans have a vote in , they always come armed with ID and do not understand that they do not need it.

I'm not sure the "Jim Crow' legislation is a fair description. A little too much msnbc or cnn I think!

basically you need id to get a driving licence, rent a property, board a plane, buy grog etc etc in the States...... I don't think requiring id to vote is such a bad thing.
One of the clauses in the JC act I read was to make it unlawful for food and water to be supplied to would be voters queuing to register. US voting seems to be a much much more involved process than here where you are in and out in less than 5 minutes, (unless you stop to chat with the tellers and the officials).

Yes because in the last election the 'helpers' that were providing food and water were dishing out the wrong pens for marking the ballot (machines couldn't read them properly, went on to a back room human processor that may have changed the intended vote) and canvassing votes in the line as they were 'helping'.

Two of the issues I have with the voting system are as follows:

You used to receive a blank voter registration form to fill in for your address, now the form you receive is prefilled with last years information, this makes it far too easy for a new occupier to claim additional votes, no one at the council is going to ever query names that they have already supplied. The occupier can then easily request postal votes for these names.

Postal votes used to be available on request for people who would be away for an election and were valid for that election only. Now once applied for they are valid until either the recipient asks for them to stop or the name is removed from the electoral register.

My Mother used to receive a postal vote, she moved into a care home last year. The new occupier will have received a form through the letterbox with her name prefilled in, hopefully they crossed through it, otherwise they will have then got her postal vote as well.

No I know they do cross reference, however you are right it is open to corruption on both ends. Even with every officer totally honest it still allows family matriarchs across the land to do as they have done , since time began and make decisions for all their extended family.
