VW Golf engine problems

A member of the family has a 2011 mk6 1.6L diesel golf. It has done 65000 miles and has just had a service. They have changed the fuel filter and found evidence of metal in it. This is the first time the filter has been changed and so the first time it has been noticed and I think it is such a small amount it is only just noticeable. The car is back with the full service being done but there's potentially a looming problem. Any body come across this before, is it best to chop it in or is there hope for it if I suggest taking it to our local diesel shop who would be working on these sorts of problems with cr diesels all the time ?

Cheers

Metal can only of come from tank or somehow from the HP pump on the return line my gut feeling would be to chance it for a week or two and change the filter again to see what’s in it but the 1.6 has a diabolical reputation any how and no independent garage or mechanic in the country would suggest one after 50k. How did they go so wrong after the 1.9 rotary pump when they went PD then CR is beyond belief.

The metal will only have come form the lift pump in the bottom of the tank. It is common for these to ware out/fail. The last one I changed on a Audi was only about £150. I would find a reliable independent garage and ask them to do the work

I managed to find a schematic on line showing a return line from the hp pump to a line back to the fuel filter, cant find it again now though.

An independent garage did the work and suggested it was either the pump in the tank or the hp pump. Is this not the case then do you think, its just the lift pump?

Why has the filter not been changed before, the age and mileage tells it's a bit overdue to change filter,. I'd have thought filters need to be changed at least every year max. On any vehicle. If it has been serviced at a main dealer in the past this might explain it, there standard of work shocking from what I see and hear.

Hi, the filter may have been changed, I assumed it hadn't but I could be wrong. Its just the question of the return line from the main hp pump to the filter.
