I've looked in to it as they would be ideal when gathering stock off the moor and cliffs,
But the ranges quoted are on clear line of sight and to be any use on hilly ground you'd need to spend quite alot to get a half decent range on less than ideal terrain
PMR's are a cheap and cheerful option which we do use on the hill for gathering. As you say, line of sight but more often than not we get over that by relaying through a third party.
we have tait ones here used to be on there own network so no one could listen but now on CB system if just useing them to move stock etc etc or simple info like tea ready etc work ok
think we get about 2-3 kms out of them so thats heaps for our use
We tried them for a few years at silage but range seemed to vary massively alright and very dependant on terrain, they were a decent enough set too. alot handier for harvest tho when most of the time we were all in the same field/s
We also spent a day listening to the banter between the staff of local adsa when we were cutting in the vicinity!!
Just bought the kids Motorola extreme (good reviews) havent tried them yet will report back. Only looking for 1 mile coverage. States 10km but I dont need that nor think it will work.
