Should a rich person have the "right" to own several homes?
Wasn’t saying that. Agreeing with another poster that single occupancy is a serious problem. Divorces and young people with the perception that with no savings and low paid jobs that they should be able to buy a house with no hardship.

Immigrants are pushing up rents, which pushes up house prices for everyone. Basic economics
High house prices happened before eu immigration started.
Deregulation by thatcher in 88 set out the field for buy to let landlords to charge what they like and evict when they like, so negating the tenants ability to argue .
Funnily enough fbt laws introduced in 95 had the same aim and same methods.
That is why we have housing and land bubbles.
Add in crash gordons pension raid and everyone turns to property instead and we have a frigging disaster scenario further fuelled by mass immigration.

Make your mind up. As said earlier I am yet to see an immigrant buy a house around here or indeed in Edinburgh and both markets are white hot at present.

It’s all about taking responsibility for your life and how you spend your hard earned cash.

I worked hard when i was young, saved what I could and did not have an extravagant lifestyle, neither did my wife.

However now we have invested our savings in our home and it is something which we are proud of and lucky to have.

A friend of mine will go to the races,£90 bottles of champagne on tap, regular nights away in swish hotels and then would say to me ‘it’s alright for you’......like I haven’t worked for it.

In my opinion, I can't see how we can increase our population by 250 000 a year, without having to improve our infrastructure and build more housing. This is question that the politicians never asked us, do we want that? Just a note, I read recently in a book, that when a middle class person in North London, votes to pay more tax they are heralded as being very enlightened and altruistic, however when a poor person in Sunderland voted for brexit (and possibly, possibly negative economic consequences) they are derided in the media as stupid (turkeys voting for christmas!).

If you cant see how masses of immigrants have pushed up demand and rents and therefore houseprices, i despair.

I'm sorry but I just can't see it. Like everywhere else, there are thousands of houses being built round here and I suspect none are being bought by immigrants. My family have been in the property business for over forty years and have yet to sell or rent a propoerty to an immigrant. If immigration was 100% stopped tomorrow I suspect it would have negligible impact on the price of houses on the open market.

Personally, I despair at people who have spent their whole lives in one the wealthiest countries in the world yet seek to blame all their ills and inadequacies on immigrants.

My experience is similar but to consider that 250000 extra people moving to this country every year does not lead to a need for more housing is disingenuous and to complain that I should suggest so is rather insulting.

I wasn't replying to you, sorry if you found it insulting.

In any case who is suggesting immigrants don't need housing? Of course they do. My point was that immigrants are not in the main buying houses. I would suggest that most immigrants are housed in social housing which pretty much operates outside of the housing market in my experience and has little impact on the housing or land market for reasons said earlier.

It’s those capitalists again they want the cheap labour but they don’t want to pay for infrastructure required to service. Short sighted blighters IMO.

There will be a degree of displacement though. Lots of immigrants I deal with are all in private rented housing, paying taxes etc. I’m certainly not blaming net immigration for the housing crisis but I think it is one of a few factors. One of the main ones is the decreasing number of people per household.

Blaming immigrants for our troubles is just racist beliefs by people of a lesser intellect IMO. The source of most of our troubles is a lot closer to home.

Hardly surprising, given that Cumbria's 98.8% old money.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cumbria

However, this may just be an environmental problem, hopefully soon to be resolved.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-cumbria-42894723

And that's pretty much exactly my point. If Cumbria is dominated by white English people then how are immigrants driving up house prices? Indeed, the Eden valley, which is the most sparsely populated unitary authority in England, has an affordability ration the same as kensington.

Conversely, Boston in Lincolnshire, where it's well documented that there is a large population of migrant workers, has seen house prices fall by over 10% in the last ten years.

The housing market and subsequently the development land market, is predominantly about location and very little to do with the demographics of the 'demand'.

You've lost me on the Sellafield link, I don't know what point you are trying to make.

Well in Boston the nimbies are all immigrants or ukip loonies, so it's much easier to develop there because the locals are disorganised brainless rabble.

No worries.... I just hate it if the moment anyone mentions immigration the race card gets played.
There is very little social housing.
With interest rates being so low, the best thing for anyone with money to do is buy the cheapest houses and let them be used for social housing knowing the council has to pay the market rate. This also removes the bottom rungs of the housing ladder for first time buyers and keeps rents/ returns high.
Immigration is a factor although it is the system to blame not the immigrants.

Good point Jackov, but with house prices so high I doubt you lads will make the sort of tax free returns I have enjoyed. TBH you should be getting into politics that way you could unlock some really juicy returns, I recommend the Tory party.

Divide and rule typical capitalism. Look at those over there, “they” are the source of your problems.

Errrr, doesn’t socialism work in exactly the same way, but the other way round?:scratchhead:

Those rich bars**rds don’t deserve it, so we’ll just take it off them and share it between everyone, regardless of whether ‘they’ have worked hard and lived on feck all to get it, or that others have spent every penny they’ve earnt before the next pay day.
Oh yes, tax the rich. They should pay a bigger proportion because they can afford it can’t they......:banghead:

You are in cloud cuckoo land.
Supply and demand dictates price of everything.
About 4 million additional people have come to britain since 2004
That is a massive demand increase which has pushed up rent and house prices.
If rents go up, people try harder to buy.
