Warburton Contracts

Why do Warburtons insist that wheat grown on contract for them can only be grown from new seed approved by them?
We have managed to keep a relatively clean farm by rogueing and growing our own seed to avoid bringing in weeds.
In 2 of the last 3 years the seed supplied for the Warburtons contract has been rubbish. Two years ago it was contaminated with barley. This year much worse it has brome grass in it.
If Warburtons continue to insist on bought in seed we will not be growing any more for them.

To be able to justify a small premium maybe they have to attach some strings or there would be no point and they would just buy off the open market.
My experience of any product supplied on contract is this even if it seems pointless. Just take the money and get on or decide bettor off not bothering which is very often the case.

It does lower the specs and put a minimum premium on though.
And they recognise the fact the nufol job does little more than trick the protein test.. It doesn't make better flour .

Is it a Warbutons requirement or a sop to the merchant handling the deal to get more value out of you?

I fancy it might be mainly to do with the second :whistle:

Other millers all seem to manage just fine and we all know how demanding they are.

Isn't Warburtons only handled by Openfield?

I've never found them competitive on seed or fert.

I do believe you are correct ;)
I don’t produce milling wheat so can somebody tell me if you have a Warburtons contract which demands new certified seed do you also HAVE to buy it from Openfield or can you choose your supplier?

It comes from openfield
Bags are barcoded so they can trace it through. It's all about traceability.

What do you need a barcode on the bag for?
Certification number on seed label which MUST be recorded and retained for Garm Assurance serves same purpose.
Oh for goodness sake, pedantic springs to mind
The label and bag are marked. Barcoded for ease of identification at their end I guess.
There's a lot of folk bending the rules on labels etc, they decided this was a condition of the contract. If you don't like the rules don't do it, simple.
The cost of seed isn't outrageous, the minimum premium is good. I lose count of the times I read/listen to folk complaining of low premiums.
The thing I don't like is new, and that's the fact they don't have to take the whole tonnage.
That's more likely to see me drop out than anything else.

They took all my B tonnage last year. My main gripe is the poor base price they have achieved in the pool over the previous 2 years.
I don't mind if they don't take the B tonnage this year, I think I might need it to fulfil another contract shortfall at this rate!

Poor base price, restricted seed supply, it’s sounding less attractive with every post  :p ..... but it could still be well worthwhile (y)
