I had a cheap angle grinder grinding disk delaminate at high speed a few weeks back. I was lucky that it fired all its crap up the shed wall but even with the guard in its right place i still got some shrapnel in the cheeks.
Note to self buy better products ...

There is a US company that has a very cool safety system for circular saws, basically they run a little electric current through the blade itself and the second it touches anything that isn't wood (like flesh) a piece of metal is flung into the blade to retract it and it stops it cold.

Here it is being filmed on a high speed camera, very very clever. I presume this kind of tech could be used to stop similar tools before serious harm is done?

That wont stop a disintegrating grinding or cutting disc on a angle grinder

The safest way with a grinder is to take the guard off, after you've touched it once by mistake, you'll never do it again. :)

Its' from the Jeremy Clarkson book on safety. His idea was, instead of an airbag in the steering wheel, a pointed spike should shoot out in a collision. He was sure that would reduce car accidents... :)

Or you could use an idiot proof sawbench for logging like a browns sliding top but you will still get those who take the guards off.

Trouble with saw cuts and if you actually cut yourself with a grinder,is they don't just cut, they remove material leaving a groove. I cut along the side of a finger with a cutting disc when snowed in for three weeks so didn't go to A and E. Still bleeding three months later if anything caught it

Treated myself to a Milwaukee kit few months back the circular saw is evil. Gets caught and shoots back all the time feels like it’s safety cut out makes it more dangerous. Was glad when my dad who’s a joiner had a go and had exactly the same problem. Having a mate who put a saw through his hand i don’t want that

Dang! Sure that was my idea years ago... I've always thought all safety features should be removed from cars, on the basis they give drivers a false sense of security and encourage them to drive badly. Who's going to boot-hug the car in front, when it's a spike in the steering wheel, not an airbag? But I guess it's the other idiot we have to protect against. The Sawstop sounds good though, but if I had one, would I start to get careless?
