I am one of a group of three joining an aid convoy of fire appliances and equipment for Ukraine. The convoy is forming up in Kent ready for an early start tomorrow.

@The Son you are about 3 hours away from us if you are traveling east along the A2
Look for junction 68 Kreuz Magdeburg (A14) we are about 10 minutes north , Biers always cold !!! Total respect for what you lads and lasses are doing stay safe and come home safe

@Xerion many thanks for the invitation.but we are on a set route Erfurt tonight. I am overwhelmed by the hospitality shown by your fire service, they are actually leading or convoy through Germany, and are feeding and accomodating 70 people every night.

It's one of the things not reported much in the media but you look at the selfless and voluntary actions of German and UK firefighters to do something to assist Ukraine and especially the Polish retained and volunteer fire service who seem to be taking the absolute lead in humanitarian assistance for Ukrainian refugees as soon as they reach Poland. 3m to date ? A remarkable effort by so many

We have arrived in Erfurt tonight sleeping in a massive arena. Once again the German fire service have pulled out all the stops feeding us providing overnight parking and security for the vehicles, and are taking us out for a tour of the town tonight. The kindness we are being shown is truly humbling.

This, amongst a few other reasons (I have been wondering about joining for years), has prompted me to apply for their vacant position. Fingers crossed and all that. My only worry is the fitness test - I am 90% pure fat

23m 4" hose reel unroll, roll and repeat 5 times in 8 minutes in full fire kit

The Occupational Health medical is also streets ahead of everything you'll have experienced with your GP for HGV medical

You won't regret it, and Cumbria are quite open with there fitness testing, if you are near the required level, and are willing to follow a program to get you up to the standard, they will support you rather than failing you.
