We had a horse rescue last week too. Nothing like as awkward as the one above. Had gone down in a loose box and needed to be pulled out, then lifted and supported until he regained his strength. Fortunately neighbouring farmer brought a Merlo. Typically we had the spare appliance (ours was in for service) so had to bodge with a bare minimum of gear.

Have to do fairly regularly with an old boy, when he lays down too long his legs go to sleep. Last time he did we all agreed it was time to get the vet to put him down, but before the vet arrived the old bugger was up and running around. He must of heard us.

Splitting a tote bag to create a makeshift harness was an option we considered at the above incident.

Although it has been discussed at high level, our Service currently has no animal rescue team or specialist equipment and we get virtually no training. Fortunately our crew has a lot of large animal experience.

Be careful what you wish for, we have a specialist animal rescue station, who have a lot of good kit, but none have practical experience, which is a shame.

As an aside, last year I organised a rural firefighting day for our senior managers, got a contractor to put some big kit here and took them around the stock buildings to try and get a bit better understanding of animals and machinery, seemed to work quite well. We are a rural brigade run from a city so anything we can do to highlight what goes on in the sticks is time well spent. Plus it was a jolly out for the officers!

A very proud dad
My eldest just passed his basic training
He will now move up to the active department

At 16 he will not be allowed to do anything that is considered dangerous as he has another two years of CPS but I can still take him with us to emergencies to help with water supply etc

Yes I know he's taller than me
