I smacked a post into a ground nest of wasps……..

Queue me running around like a loon stripping my shirt of…..and 6 bites.

They were mini wasps. Lot smaller than normal ones but the buggers hurt.

I got stung twice on Sunday , trimming the garden hedge with a petrol hedgecutter - one on the lip.

Saw a couple on the shoulder of my fleece - so pulled it off and left it for a couple of hours.

Agree they are smaller this year but I guess like everything else this year they had a late start.

What’s the best way to get rid of a nest

They don’t like WD40, but that’s nowhere near as satisfying as the petrol and match idea.

Had a nest in mums garden shed a few years ago. I waited until a cold morning and got it into a metal bucket . Half an inch of petrol and I left it to burn out. That evening I had a poke. The nest was about the size of a grapefruit and had hardly even been charred. All the grubs inside were perfect.

They were late appearing here but got em now, so far no stings. Most effective way of killing a nest is to use the aerosol fly and wasp spray directly on a the nest. Mate of mine has done it in a tea shirt, bare arms an all and got away with it, when I do it its full coverage, paper overalls, gloves, helmet...the lot... two tins on a big nest though, one in each hand.

I,v one nest under the living room floor through air vents,raised floor.luckly only going in and out of vent .Not crawling upwards.

Plenty of em here Too.also had a load of hornets swarming round a security light.never seen so many about 40/50mm long and the swarm was a metre in diameter.got stung by one that caused me a terrible experience and an altered scarred face.

I have never seen so few, we have those orange wasp traps around the house, last year emptying them most days , this year nothing.

I haven't seen any this year. I seem to remember grandad wandering around taking out the nests with his tin of Cymag.

nothing here this year, normally see them around.
If the nest is in a hedge with a small entrance hole I find the best way of destroying it is to use a blow lamp after dark with the flame roaring into the hole.

Not seen as many in pembrokeshire this year

Few here in Carmarthenshire. We had two nests. One I destroyed as it was in a doorway. The other was in a hollow blockwork pillar which I left as it wasn't doing any harm. It was a big nest and then it suddenly died out. No idea why, but I don't like destroying things unless I have to. They do a lot of good unless you are allergic to them.

What do wasps do?

Wasps and humans may have a rocky relationship. But should these insects be revered rather than feared?

Weather in April and May did for the Queens trying to establish nests having come out of hibernation. I do some pest control work as a summer sideline and numbers are 50% down on last year. More Hornets about this year.
Had a nest in a tree stump last year still live in late November.

I was sitting out on the lawn a short while ago having a cream tea and thought about 2021 summer & autumn.I have not seen a Wasp anywhere this season,where are they ? Last year they were everywhere,what going on ?

Very few here in Suffolk and not many flies either despite having pigs 20 yards from the house

I’ve never seen so many wasps! They’ve started appearing in house on a daily basis!

Killing half a dozen a day inside the house and plenty more outside, the wasp trap near the kitchen door has an inch of dead wasps in it.

Definitely less than normal but there is a very busy nest in the eaves of my house, had a queen wasp in the kitchen last night.
Nippon Wasp Nest Destroyer foam is incredible stuff, nest will be dead in half an hour. Can't get at the nest in my eaves to do it, can't find the entrance properly.
