Waste Carrier licence - what a joke.

Got the message in the other thread about police checks, and decided maybe I'd look at the cost of a licence for taking my scrap to the dealer every year, something I've been doing forever.

Top of the Google page for "Waste Carrier Licence" was a site looking very official offering Low Tier licences for £35. "Not too bad", I thought, but the next entry was offering the same licence for £32.50. ""Funny", I thought" (remember that?). So poked around a bit and found the damn thing is free! These scammers set up their sites, make you think they're the official business, and basically pinch your dosh. But of course they'd say they're charging for getting you your licence, so not illegal. But it's immoral and should be stopped.

And what's it all about anyway? To get a licence, you just give your name, address, phone and email. Done. So a 6-year old could get one. Or a monkey. I might get a licence in the name of my dog, come to think of it. You don't need a driving licence, insurance, proper vehicle, anything.

What a total waste of time. :banghead:

I think there's quite a few things out there that you either don't actually need or don't have to pay a fortune for if you actually read the rules. But there's an increasing number of 'experts' that set up to make money out of compliance.
Just look at the H&S job.

Ce certification is another. It's free, you have to find the directive and compile a dossier showing you've looked and expedited each one. Companies charging 1-5k for ce certification compliance. [emoji34]

But it's not waste unless no one has a use for it. Personally, I occasionally carry items of great artistic merit and I defy anyone to prove me wrong. If a pile of bricks and an unmade bed can be worth a fortune, what may appear to you to be a pile of scrap is a collector's item of great value to me. Until I get to the scrap yard, anyway.

Scrap has a use and a value so should it be classed as waste?
