Waste of grease?

The old SIP rake threw a wobbly the other day, main drive shaft bearing failure.
I have religiously greased this bearing but the bugger still collapsed. On strip down I couldn’t see how the grease is meant to get where it is needed. I removed the flange, twisted the bearing outer out of the flange, second from left in photo, gave it a clean, but cannot see anywhere for the grease to pass into the bearing.
Was the collapsed bearing sealed for life and not a greaseable type? Are greaseable bearings available? Nipple on flange suggests it is/was able to take grease.

The only difference between a sealed bearing and one thats not is the seal :rolleyes:

If you want it too be a greased one just pick out the seal (s) it's not rocket science.

The' functinality of oil ' or' grease ways' drillied/ machined into the pins etc is another matter all together.
 
We had an early 2 bar reciprocating harrow with a flywheel and yoke drive similar to a vari-spreader ( I think it was blue and NOT a Lely of Vicon or Amazone) which was suppled from new with sealed bearings - The importers would pick out the metal seals and drill a couple of 1.5mm holes in them and put them back and drill the housings to put a grease nipple in - a couple of pumps of grease every 4 hours of work until it exuded through the holes drilled in the metal seals was the order of the day.
 
Those bearing inserts in cast housing are awful in my experience. You grease them and it looks like grease is coming out the bearing. Job done. Or do you think.
But look closely. Grease is actually coming out between the outer race and housing and not getting to where it needs to be
My slurry whisk used to get threw 1 or 2 a year

gave up greaseing it and just throw oil on every time I use it and this bearings done atleast 5 year

Yes hugely annoying, the self aligning ones like we have in this instance are the worst for it. The grease escapes where the bearing swivels in the housing and never goes in the bearing

Or does it get a bit in the bearing until the seal stops any more going in and the rest out the swivel gap? It would only need the tinyest bit anyway.

Any much more than a couple of pumps often just pushes the metal seals out.. then it’s all heading for destruction! Some bearings have lugs to stop rotation but some don’t. The Bomford head wears the housings and gets slack but the bearings are still ok. Rubbish setup all round, all bearings should have a foolproof greasing system.
 
Is it a tightish fit in the housing ?
A bearing that size in a good fitting housing ,I would (just me ) give 2 or 3 shots/strokes once a day or 10 odd working hours . Dont know anything about over greasing and I only use basic lever and pistol guns

*If you can achieve it safely* I think these type of bearings are better greased with the shaft rotating, it does seem to help the grease make it into the actual bearing as opposed to coming straight out between the insert and housing.

not sure you could now it's a sealed unit in there. I doubt it will have the strike or the hole in the outer shell.
