Waste Plasterboard

I have about 4 dumpy bags stuffed with waste plasterboard after farmhouse refurbishment. Local tip wont take it.

Can I break it up and spread it? Its gypsum I assume?

Why won't the local tip take it ?

Surely the local councils are there to make Recycling work not just ignore it.

This is the problem. If the local tip won't take it, then what do people do but fly tip it?

I would say go through the bags, remove all the timber and nails/screws from it, then throw it all under the nearest dung heap and let it rot down and spread it in the autumn. It's only paper and gypsum at the end of the day.

According to the tinterweb… “Plasterboard is actually designated as non-hazardous waste. It is, however, officially banned from landfill sites and has been in England since 2005. This is due to the gypsum found in plasterboard, that when wet or is mixed with biodegradables such as food, it can produce hydrogen sulphide.”
Get the stuff wet & it will break down really easily. Mixed in with some dung I’m sure it would be fine, just not in a confined space.

Nothing but plasterboard in these bags, wood and anything with a nail/screw in it went to the tip as we went through the job thankfully

I was wanting to take something to my local recycling centre, looked on line, I have to book an appointment and take proof of my address/identification with me (according to the website), I have a feeling all this is due to Covid? Funny that throughout Covid the supermarkets managed to stay open with out having to pre book or take identification. Of course they are there to sell and make money, council are there to support the jobs of the council workers! Is it any wonder that there are problems with fly tipping!

I put small amounts in with cattle when we were doing some work on the house ,didn't cause any problems. 4 dumpy bags isn't much I would put one in at a time unless its a big shed

If it’s foil backed, it will need peeling off. Other than that we just smash it up and stick it on the muck heap when it needs pushing up.

Trade can bloody well pay for their waste disposal.

I don't want to pay my council tax for disposal of some waste gathered by 'man with van's.
