I have problem with water main to house, we had a burst main, , water lot fixed it but still no h2o in house.i put a pipe over surface in the meantime. I tried backflushing the pipe the other day, but nothing came out the other end.
Would there be a non return valve?

There should be non return valves or air gaps in all mains connection. To stop contamination getting back into the system.

Try and speak to local water inspector they are usually pretty good.

Depends a lot on the original set up. How did you try back flushing?

Our main got caught with a subsoiler as it crossed a couple fields our side of the meter . It's about a 1km run from meter to house/yard so my responsibility.

After 12 hours obvious where break was so we dug it out and fixed it but soil had been dragged into pipe so flow was rubbis.

We used a road air compressor , removed a tap in the yard and blew it back after opening the repair so crud could get out. I was standing at that end and it was quiet impressive to see.

First time we tried to blow back just through an open tap but that does not work as the pressure from compressor causes the washer to seal some how .

I tried s compressor first, it didnt work.
Its very odd
I connected my overground alkathene pipe to the underground pipe at the house end and tried to backflush it, but nothing came out other end
If its a serious burst, i thought something might come out, or if a blockage blow it out
There is no water coming to surface anywhere.
The big burst we had was the main had blown the stopcock off, and nothing came up then either, it was all disappearing down rabbit holes
I only found it cos i heard it.
Where has the scratch head emoji gone to?

After recent water meter changes we had issues. The water pressure was very low and I thought it was due to stones entering the system as they did not clean the meter box out before changing and it was half full of road grit.
the AWA engineer said that the stop cock can be pushed shut somehow when the water is turned off. He checked my stop cock which was seized and advised me to get plumber in as he dare not touch it.
I was able to get it released thankfully and it sorted the problem.
They changed all the meters in the village, no idea why, using an independent company who were allowed about five minutes each according to the operator who did mine. Since then AWA have been kept very busy changing our probably 10% of the new meters due to leakages. I would guess most are from stones and rubbish getting in the seal if all the meters were changed as mine was.
The difference though , is that the AWA guys have to close the road and take a minimum of half a day to change the meter

Got to love those Utilities....

STW was going to charge us for a change of meter as it had been damaged by vehicles running over it. The box is in the verge and had been damaged by the drongo builders erecting a new property off the road.

I was told that as it my property, the responsibilty lay with me. I gently pointed out that my property was actuall nearly 1km away, and why don't they charge the developer or his builders who had also managed to crush their own meter and stop tap!!

No apology, bit they did shut up...

Is there a meter between the burst and the house? If so thar will be your problem. And yes a lot of them have a non return valve. The opening on a lot of newer meters is about 15mm so will be a definite “bottleneck “

Could you connect up a tank of water and pump it through from break back to house? Maybe also consider the levels and any changes - old place we had there was an “engineered” bleed point at low level to help fill the pipe from the source down to the base of the valley, before it rose up again to the house. That shouldn’t be an issue with mains, but who knows?
