Water pump

We are going to install a tank to provide pressurised water to our 100 dairy cows, youngstock and plate cooler. If possible we would like to feed about 5 troughs on a grazing block from the pump (600m of 32mm pipework already in place) what pump would people recommend? 3 phase is available of necessary.

One of these, very simple and cost effective.

Mains or borehole?

4kw one here for 300 cows, small pressure cylinder on the floor and vari speed drive on the wall.

something like this would be big enough for your amount of cows

The idea of buying all those water fittings, not sure i could do it. 🤣 Looks good though.

Do it right, do it once. But looks like he bought one fitting too many & couldn’t afford the last bit of pipe. Now he’s got a water leak underneath 🤣

damn is that where all the waters gone?! Haha

was waiting for a Tee piece, got it set now so the wash down pump can be used to feed the field troughs and vice versa

What sort of fittings is it by the pressure vessels & on some of the black pipe? Electrofusion?

Yes electrofusion. When you realise some of them big fittings are a 3rd cheaper in electrofusion it works out better to do it that way, should have done it all that way but didn’t know until someone said. I’ve bought a second hand one on eBay now so will be doing everything in fusion from now on. Only place I’ll use compression fittings is in an emergency or when it’s next to a pump in case it needs taking apart

I did notice the difference in price, but the same as you it was too late. You obviously like them then & had no problems? Like them enough to use them underground as well? I might look into it. Got another couple of pumps & tanks to put it for the robots at some point to finish the system off & some underground pipework needs finishing off so we can use more of our own water & rainwater for volume washer etc.

Yes I’ll be using them underground, it’s a little more prep scraping the pipe off but I don’t think they will ever leak underground like a compression fitting

Tell me more on electro fusion? Never heard of it. Local pipe place did ask if I was fitting up a small town last time I went in.

Is your water filtered and sterilised before going into that tank? Is there any other storage, or is your well large? Just thinking 300 cows with a thirst on would soon get through that tank full

This would be the most common

There’s also face fusing, they used this here for joining 315mm water main in 40’ lengths.

No its mains water, got 50mm coming from the meter too the tank, got a 3/4 valve in the tank and then we have adjusted the valve on the wall so when tank running it’s not robbing the house. Working very well.
We can’t have a borehole as there is brine below us.
we have a clean water pond which collects all roof water we put that through a filter and then add hypo and it goes through the plate cooler to help cool the milk and is then used for washing down.

We may try and setup a well at some point but need to get ground water tested

I remember something about surface water, that's what it was. Just wondering about the best way to use roof and shallow well water, organise UV filters etc

we have looked at it and think its too risky. a well in the far corner of the farm away from slurry contamination maybe but is the possibility if poisoning the cows worth it. we do run a borehole at the other farm and wouldnt be without it
