Water used to produce some foods

After hearing a quote on QI, saying that it takes 1.1 gal of water to produce 1 Almond, I had to wonder how sustainable this was, considering the water issues in many countries.

A few examples of the water used for some foodstuffs.

but surely the water is not lost? it is only temporarily used then recycles ultimately to be used again
Not lost, but it is exported from regions where water is an issue to places where there is an abundance.

For example, the water used to grow Almonds in California is more than the domestic usage of the State's population of 39 million people.

Which is quite a problem in an area where drought is often an issue.

Beef, dairy and other farming methods use a lot of water, but these can be carried out in regions where water is in abundance.

I am travelling around California at the moment. I had the pleasure of @oil barron taking me for a tour round his local area. The amount of water being used to grow all the salad crops, nut trees, keep cattle watered etc etc was simply eye watering. No pun intended. Sprinklers on everywhere, flood irrigation. You name it, every field had it.

How many gallons does an average human use a day?
How much more than the most efficient humans?
Very interesting question - I would hazard a guess that upbringing has a lot to do with it.
Some families would have no chance of living for months on a small rainwater tank, others would have no trouble getting a year out of it.
Some folk would use more cleaning a clean body and clean clothes per day, than a family of 5 who have to carry what they use from a well - if you don't value it, it is of little value - like a free education.

it may be used , but never lost.
Many countries recycle waste water into thew farming as it has added benefit of a lot of nutrients.
A classic is tomatoes in Spain recycling the waste of millions of tourists :D
