Water wheel

Easiest way is to hire the casting mould and let your local casting smelter make the wheel for the timber to slot in. Cannot remember the name to hire the moulds from but I am sure it was a museum in North Wales.

Also have no personal experience of these but they do have a good reputation.

I had a look at the case study. A 177:1 gearbox is one serious beast. That is the problem with a waterwheel and a generator. I suppose the engineering used in modern aerogenerators means there is more expertise around now.

there was a guy matrin episode where he restored a small water generator (pelton wheel type) looked to be hellish powerful, are they were much more efficient that old style

some years ago, I visited a woollen mill in Wales. There was a working turbine in situ which couldnt be used as the two charges for the water were too high. They would have been charged for extraction, and again for discharging "dirty" water into the stream!

A few Archimedes screw generators about in the south where mountains and therefore heads of water insufficient for turbines: https://cleggassociates.co.uk/hydro...n-renewable-energy-projects-dorset-hampshire/

Get a big tractor wheel and hub and build it out
I'm on with a water wheel to power a 15 KW generator, using a 38" tractor rim and 16 flights. I have sufficient flow all year round.
The source is travelling at 8 mph so I'll increase ratio to get to 380 Rpm. I'll use resistors to stop over speed

Has anyone built a water wheel of any scale or know anyone that has

I used to live in an old watermill, that the original leat had been filled in by a neighbour where it went through his field, 40 years ago. We did all the flow calcs in the stream and then made the mistake of consulting the rivers authority to ask about reinstating the leat. I think we had 5 visits, once with 6 clip board warriors. It looked feasible , then they started talking about charging for the water. The neighbour then decided that he wanted half the electric if we piped the water under the old leat route. That was the end of a good idea ......
I have a good spot on the farm here now, I rather favour just getting on with it for some reason.

JDI .

plenty of sensible developments seem to get shat on whilst luxury houses are beoing built all over and spoiling the countryside willy nilly.

and it could be a beaver building the weir :sneaky:

There is a series of earlier vids. where he installs a Pelton wheel type and that is better, I like the look and sound of the old water wheel going round but not very efficient considering how much metal it takes to make it.
Yes I seen them, Pelton seems a lot better, but looks like you need a good head of water piped to get a useful pressure, and a water wheel less head, and just down a race, it will depend on the site available, also wheel will make less sound then a Pelton turbine
