We are leaving the EU

My wife and I that is. We never wanted to be part of it,and voted against it in the first referendum as well as the second, but 18 years ago we felt we needed to live somewhere warmer. I was castigated for living in Portugal during the lead up to Brexit, but, whilst I refused to go into detail, we had our reasons. I still refuse to divulge why we are here, but since we have always said that since we must die, we will do it in Scotland.

Scotland will not rejoin the EU in our lifetimes no matter what happens about so called Independence, but we have decided to leave the EU physically and mentally are enjoying the idea that we will be back "home" without interference from the likes of Verhofstadt, Juncker and Macron. They will be followed by similar people. Nicola will not be around forever.

Hope you find your "Shangri la" in Scotland.

In as far as the reasons can be, good for you and I hope all goes well with the move.

Never understood the bitching, I'm as strong a believer in Brexit as any, but I've never been against Brits living over there or Europeans over here; it's not about 'boycotting' goods or people either way, it's just about political independence and going a different way. Any over there telling us what to do can F off, and the Europeans are equally entitled to say the same to Brits or their own people over here who lecture them.

I think @Guleesh has identified a rather brilliant new market for exploitation; best of British!

In a nutshell...
We voted to leave the EU, not Europe.

Portugal is colder, and Orkney not as cold as many folks think. We are not far from the ski lifts here. I suppose some folks would not be aware that Portugal has ski lifts. Orkney did have snow earlier this year, it happens. Being small islands surrounded by sea, the mean temperature in Kirkwall is higher than Inverness, which itself is close to sea level and the sea itself. Higher ground is colder. We had lots of snow and plenty of hard frosts on the top of the Black Isle before we came here. A hill farm inland in Northumberland before we went to Australia was a lot colder and endured a lot more snow than that too. We had snow there in June – the day after the first European referendum, and a bad sign in my opinion.

As some of you know from a certain thread on TFF I have taken a great deal of notice of changing temperatures for more than a few years, and have no qualms about Orkney weather.

We accept there is a lot of wind and rain on Orkney, but the Azores are the same. Only a wee bit warmer. You can always wrap up against bad weather, but once you get down to your skin in hot times there is nothing more to take off.

But was Brexit not about ending freedom of movement?

We left Portugal in the brief space when it was on the Green list. In Orkney 3 days and viewed a place we had seen on the internet. Bought it and moved in earlier in the month. Just got internet back today.

My wife did wave when we thought we were over Zumerzet as was requested, but did not see @Henarar wave back.
Good to hear you got sorted, hope its not to hot up there LOL
I didn't see you, you should have tooted the horn or something

What happened to all the trees on Orkney...?

Nothing so far as I know. Still plenty about. No big woodlands, but lots of small numbers all over the place.

It is just topping 19º each day. Very dry thoug. We arrived on 31 May and there has been no rain to speak of. Drizzly days and sometimes overnight. I only record if it is 1mm or more, but nothing to report. Lots of silage been and being made. No experience of it myself but the swathes I have seen looked heavy (if I was judging it for hay). I am surprised at how big the fields are, and I have seen a few very nice looking bulls.

Never thought about asking the pilot to give a blast for you.

Can you post a link to the thread where you have posted regarding changing temperatures please.

Good luck with your move. I sent some ewe lambs and a tup up to Orkney last year. Hope they are thriving up there too.

I have just updated my profile to reflect my retirement and move. I was obliged to lie and say I am from Australia otherwise I would have had to say I am from Europe or somewhere else equally untrue.

As the title of the thread - I left Europe where I had been residing for a while. I am originally from GREAT Britain, which never was and never will be part of Europe. It is a group of islands bounded by the North Sea. English Channel and Atlantic Ocean.

Why is there no provision for saying I am from GREAT Britain?
