but then look at french agriculture, yes they have large farms, but they also have many many small family farms, plus the farmers, fishermen in france have a lot of political power? Its about numbers?

Father in law used to tell a story about about a neighbour who had an American farmer come to visit, he was standing in the yard an basically saying is this all ya got…. “It takes me x many hours to take my truck to this corner of the ranch” then another however many hours to get to this place an so on…. The neighbour replied with oh I remember when I used to have a pick up like that too

After BSE a delegation from the US came to Britain and were shown the cattle tracebility we had in place. Holding numbers, passports, birth books and numerous (often duplicated) records and assurance schemes.

Instead of the reaction which was expected, the Americans roared with laughter:
"That ain't farmin', that's gardenin'.

Neighbour went to Canada as a lad, in horse work days. He claimed that he would 'plow' out in the morning, have his bait time, and then back in the afternoon. Thats with a 4 horse, 2 furrow plow.

Lots of acres but what yield....

It’s like talking about turnover and profit.

The speed their combines go at says a lot about their low input low output vast average concept.

I believe their crop yields are far less than to the UK. Perhaps they need the acreage to make a living

Exactly!

Biggest issue with crop insurance is the premium goes up every time you claim it. Boss reckoned many in states like texas were virtually bankrupt due to sky high insurance premiums, having claimed it every year for many years.

Depends. Dry land wheat would be a lot less than the UK, but then from Mid missouri down to Kentucky they will be double cropping beans after. Irrigated wheat in the desert will be huge yields.

Maize yields in america have increased a lot over the last 20 years while UK wheat has plateaued. In South Dakota they could be getting monster maize yields over 6 ton an acre in places close to the Minnesota border.

West Texas and the panhandle has big water issues. You get farmers moving east out of there over past Witchita and over to Paris Area south of the red river will be ploughing up pasture and “farm it up” for a few years to get the insurance yields then farm the insurance or flip it on to unsuspecting investors based on the insurance yields.
