This is true of most rural villages and towns in France. On a hot day or after about 5pm they all appear to be abandoned as everyone retreats behind shutters.

Yes. But scribus does have a point about this region. There are an awful lot of holiday homes which are no good for the region imo and it’s a slippery slope as the young move to more active areas for jobs and action leaving this area even less attractive for the next young. It is actually a bit of a worry getting older here as it gets harder and harder to find anyone to do anything.
Not sure how this is on topic at all though :scratchhead:

To be honest the French have "gotten over it" a bit too much, they should be forever in our debt as should the Irish for the bailout a few years ago but those two seem to be worst for saying we should be made an example of.
As for the Nov 1st party, we'll still be forgiving enough to drink Champagne, you should follow our example rather than all the bitter divisive point scoring, you can't affect the outcome so chill out a bit.

I am sure the Irish should be grateful for the 3.5 billion loaned by the UK, but a lot more grateful to the Euro zone for the 85 billion.

Or maybe we should be grateful for the healthy return in interest we’ve received on the money we loaned them?

Should we also feel guilty for the multitude of wars that the UK have fought against the French, or does our memory only last to the very few times we were part of the international coalition that helped to liberate them?

In the new world of Brexit Britain, it is a necessity to have a selective memory.

A few points.

"We" = 65 Million people.

Perhaps 10 VERY RICH members of the aristoracy controlled those wars.

Ordinary people didn't have the vote, very little money, no power and were lucky if they had enough to eat. Many were serfs or in other words Slaves.

I also note you make no mention of wars initiated by France .. of which there were a lot including against their own populace.

I shall be grateful when all of the establishment linked to the enslaving my ancestors are dealt with .. a good start would be confiscating all their assets and removing them from the reigns of power.

All of you know that the French have never forgiven us and the USA for liberating them from the German tyranny. They are embarrassed about this and look the other way.

I have always found the French like the British especially in rural areas, it would be interesting for the French to have a vote on the EU.

Why should we feel guilty of wars against France? They started it be invading in 1066, they should be careful what they wish for.

Government of unity led by Jezza the commie Corbyn. Best laugh for ages...ha ha ha.

Agreed, and all are dead, just like almost all of the UK and German veterans from WW 1&2, and certainly those very few who initiated and propagated the conflict.

Yet plenty of accusations are thrown at modern day Germans for their ancestors involvement in the wars by the various Brexit promoting posters on here - can't you see the hypocracy in that?

Qman - you're English I think, or certainly not of Highland extraction. Should I be holding a grudge against you personally for the actions your ancestors took against mine? It's only 273 years since the Lowlanders and English fought against the Highlanders at Culloden. Of course not, yet you're perfectly happy to make remarks like

Why should we feel guilty of wars against France? They started it be invading in 1066, they should be careful what they wish for.

At least though we can agree on one thing though:

Government of unity led by Jezza the commie Corbyn. Best laugh for ages...ha ha ha.

@Highland Mule Yes I am English but I did have a great grandparent who was Scottish!

I do not blame the German people for what happened 80 years ago. What went on after the treaty of Versailles explains why the Nazis got control. The thing I don't want is for Germans ruling us now, I want to be ruled by someone I can vote for or vote against. Why has this unknown, unelected Ursula van de Leyden made president of the EU? I don't remember voting for her, do you? Why has Christine Lagarde been put in charge of EU finance when she appears to have made some serious mistakes and maybe should be in a locked cell.

I want us to leave the EU and I hope we do, this does not mean I hate Europe or its people, I love going there and eating and drinking their produce. I just want to break free...

Sounds a bit like Boris - we vote for the people who vote for their leader. I take it you're either one of the 23,716 who voted for him in Uxbridge, or you're similarly disappointed in that result.

Project Fear 2.0 ? What a load of bunkum to suggest that Germany will be 'ruling us' if we don't leave the EU. Sorry, but you're either very devious to suggest it, or very gullible to have believed it when others did.

The Charente and Haute Vienne would be a wasteland without the British , no self respecting french farmer would buy a farm there .

It was the only “abandoned” village I could think of but as you say, “abandoned” is pushing it somewhat. We live about 20 miles from there so yes, we know what happened in June 1944.

Actually the French by and large have, “gotten over it” to build a better future. It has disappointed me that 51% of my fellow countryman are too small minded to be able to do the same. My reasons for moving weren’t just the weather and longer winter days.
Enjoy your November 1st party
The French, Dutch and other occupied nations have in general “gotton over it” It seems to me only the British keep bringing it back up, this could be because of their general desire to live in the past.

I'm me .. I suggest Liberals stop "Labelling" people.

You lot go on about "isms" all the time .. the next second you're dictating to others how they think and calling em names. Give it a rest.

The biggest facists on the planet are Liberals .. just face the fact a lot of people think the past few decades of Global Liberalism have been dire.

Says the hypocrite living in New Zeland.

I'll just remind you here about all the posts you've made supporting your exports to the UK at the expense of the UK farmer.
Why is it hypocritical to live in NZ.
No need to remind me of my support for Free Trade, if UK farmers are unable to compete then they need to improve production and marketing or do something else, that is how the capitalist world works.
Presently the UK farmer cannot compete due to having no marketing structure in place, that is not the fault of anyone other than UK farmers themselves.
Now reflect on your hypocritical comment about "Why would the EU want to destroy the UK economy" ?

Monopoly of supply is the gold standard of any company for obvious reasons .. god knows why I even have to say it .. you've even tried justifying your own products in exactly the same context.
The comment “why would the EU want to destroy the UK economy?” Is not hypocritical at all, it is a genuine question, it makes no sense to destroy an economy that is a consumer economy and takes a large amount of imports, destroying the economy results in those consumers having less disposable income therby having less ability to buy imported goods.
Monopoly of supply is not always beneficial, it results in inefficiencies and higher costs, Just where have I justified my own products via a monopoly, I much prefer competition.

I was one of the 90000 who had a vote on the Tory leader. Which is 90000 more than voted for Ursula van der Leyton
Orient.

I'm not gullible I know what is going on. Go Boris go, you are our last chance of a democratic country.
