Weather old school

Was talking to my plumber yesterday and the weather came up in the conversation. His mother in the 80's had been chatting with her freind who has been predicting weather for 40 years. Since he was a nipper and now 87 and very active, he has been collecting and recordinging information on weather, birds, insects, flowers rain fall and a lot of things we would not think of, he's says the weather patturns for a season are easy to predict when you know what to look for!! Apparently he has only got it wrong 4 times in 40 years???
So here we go, going to be good all though August so no combine and rape drilling troubles. Into September we will start with some rain but not like last year and should be a good autumn for drilling on the whole! Get the snow shovels to the ready as of Boxing Day 2013 it is coming, says it will be the worst winter since 63, I think that's the year he said, time will tell?

Remember The Journal newspaper in the north east published a month by month forecast for the year 2000 in their millennium celebration edition on or around 1st Jan 2000. When the estate secretary brought it to the office after the break I had a look & said I would take the growing season forecast, but wasn't looking forward to the wet back end it forecast. Fabulous growing year happened as forecast, 10t barley, 12t wheat yields- but as we all remember, god it was wet! The whole prediction was uncannily accurate- although you always look for the traits to read into it(like a horoscope). Was done by a chap who uses patterns over preceding years I believe.

If we are heading for the worse winter since '63 we're in for a nasty one indeed.

Its a documentary about the 63 winter within a recent nature programme, starts at about 3:45 in.
