Morning all. Just curious if people try and chit volunteer seeds before drilling of just let them grow naturally. If you do encourage a chit what do you use? Thanks.

As long as you've got a good spread of chaff and straw either plant a bit of cover crop or just leave it, what ever takes you fancy

Tried cutting linseed a couple days ago, chopped the straw.
Went well enough, apart from unthrashed pods in the tank so I'm going to leave it till next week to try again.
Had a little cover crop seed left so tried drilling into the chopped straw, no problems at all, literally wouldn't know it was there.
Perfect, save a lot of time burning.

Baled the wheat straw and was just wondering if leaving the stubble alone before drilling winter barley would get wheat volunteers to chit and burn off.

I've worn a good inch off my discs so probably irrelevant but the deepest of the middle holes.
Into chopped wheat straw, got into moisture at about inch and a half.
Really drying out round here now.

Perfect I’m on the top of the middle holes and that seems good. Any lower and it isn’t consistent enough and leaving some seed on top! Tyre pressure 17psi

Does anyone have any rape coming through yet, mines been in 10 days now and there isn't much happening apart from plenty of slugs about, I seem to have just created the perfect home for them :(

Mines coming, but it's very dry in places so not much happening there, snails are nibbling so doing a second sluxx application shortly.

how longs yours been in?

i think my problem was i drilled when ground was a little to wet and then rolled a little to late and slugs were already in the slot. we've had quite a bit of rain here and with combining so late it was a rush to get rape in :(

22nd August.
Not rolled, perhaps I should've.
What hit moisture is up, indeed most in less than a week.
What's left is needing today's moisture.
No flea beetle to talk of so far.

Sounds like you've done well!
mine will hopefully surprise me
Could it be it didn't need rolling?
Or had it germinated before you rolled which could have damaged the shoot?
If it's been really wet with you, what's the soil temp like? Cold wet soil won't encourage growth.

Little trial plot of wheat going in.
It's in the ground no problem at all, too deep possibly, will pull it out a little bit I think.
God only knows if I'll see it grow though.

How are weaving GD operators of trailed drills setting up the drill in firm ground like Lucerne?
I tried today and found because the discs swivel that the drill was dancing around like it was on marbles. We had penetration but the drill was tracking off something terrible even on very flat ground. It maybe how I have it set up but even with the back wheels touching the ground it didn't want to track properly. Up to now we have been getting on fine after normal crops but this certainly has me sratching my head.

Interested to hear if you have any more thoughts on this. We are first year no-till with a new 3m gd on a used caddy. Having a lot of crabbing and drift even on the most gentle of slopes. Advised by weaving to try putting some weight on the caddy wheels and reducing the length of the colter rams to put the drill less “on its toes” but still not great. It had been very dry and we are on brashy soils with lots of small stone but it’s almost unmanageable. Luckily it was cover crop because I wouldn’t want cash crops drilled like that! Any thoughts greatly appreciated!

Sorry didn't see your post to now. In the end the wheat came up pretty well after the Lucerne. Once I had the wheels touching at the back on the new style drill I didn't have trouble with it wandering. I thought it was going to be to shallow in places but being in the autumn we did get rain and although slow coming up the stand is about right.
