I would say you only need pressure to close the slot , if you get the required penetration you only need enough pressure to close the slot , you could let some pressure out of the press wheel to reduce pressure over the seed .

I think your right I think it needs to crumble the slot better especially in spring. I find closure good but it opens again sometimes because the slot is so clean cut
Yes very clean cut and dry weather opens it up again. Second spring iv had where every seed comes through up which is good but it comes out of the slot and not through the top

I’ve had good results this year from waiting till it’s dry enough to shear the flap of soil as the disc goes through and rolling with paddles down

My spring barley looks to be doing pretty well even though conditions at drilling were quite variable between the fields. There were quiet a few patches where slots seemed rather open, even after a pass with rolls, but it doesn't seem to have effect it too much compared to the rest by the looks of it at the moment. It's certainly fairing a lot better than the unidrill planted spring barley did in 2018.

When the gd was first developed they tried narrower wheels as the big disc had but these cut in too much
on the big disc they had a depth wheel
I found in very dry Spring conditions the big disc With weight put on the closing wheel was at its best
but in had dry condition the big disc had high disc wear And some times cracked the disc and made the bearing work harder leading to early failure
the gd reduced the wear by more than 50%
the slot can open when it dries out after drilling when it is not quite dry enough ( heavy rain in the conditions is not good either ) timeing is everything with notill
these issues are reducing with every year as the soil improves ,having a layer of straw /cover crop debris also make it easier
In spring bare ground should be avoided on lighter land to ovoid moisture loss in dry weather
and on heavy land to avoid The slot drying out when you go when it is not quite dry enough
in spring a layer of cover also reduces the spring germinating weeds that need light to germinate

Before you ask, I took the rear wheels off to narrow its width for the 150 trip home.
