Q: Based on temperature differences noted - should tyre pressures be the same summer and winter? Does the flexibility of the tyres alter greatly based on time of year also? Stephen mentions "ambient temperature" but that varies significantly through the year.

Equally, surely the weight will surely alter the tyre temperature too. It's not like we're running like a lorry - either full or empty.
Stephen's reply: Will be changes depending on the pressure differential. As manufacturers, factor in ambient temperature to working temperature to get the right profile when it is running at operating pressure.

Thanks all - we will share the video tomorrow, when it is published, for you to watch back. Any other questions, please let us know and can forward to Harry or Stephen. Hope you're able to have a good session with your pressure gauge and charts when you have a quiet moment of downtime in June/similar.

When I logged on I was asked for credit card details

I didn't get asked for any credit card details. There was a data privacy notice at the bottom that said as your were not handing over credit card details the data would be handled as normal. I did however think that was a odd statement to put at the bottom.

Webinar: Tyres, Traction & Compaction
During this webinar on the tyres, traction and compaction Stephen Lamb, Bridgestone and Harry Henderson, AHDB discussed tyre choice, the benefits of a VF (Gen3) field-based tyre, soil compaction and the importance of the square inch, tyre pressure management and the importance of having a balanced tractor.

This was the image I was referring to. I get the point about pressure based upon the colouring in showing higher pressure on the LH as opposed to the RH.

It would mean a bit more to me if all three pictures weren't different sizes, gradually getting bigger as you go across. It comes across rather misleading imo - if it's a genuine error then it's a convenient one.

Exactly the same is true in the earlier slide where they showed a "theoretical" image of each of the tyres shapes - the Gen 3 tyre image shows as being nearly 25% wider.

I'm all for new technology and I must admit I was unaware of Gen 3 tyres existing so I've learnt something new from this.

I just wish it wasn't quite so sales pitchy and was scientifically accurate. It loses quite a bit of credibility from me on that front. It must have cost significant amounts of money to create this new tech tyre design so a professional explanation would have done it justice. It looks to me like a marketing idea to increase the "wow" factor.

@Steevo It's the same tyre at 3 different pressures in your first image - as the pressure goes down the foot print gets bigger therefore the blue box gets wider.

Great Webinar. I will definitely be doing better research before buying next set of tyres. I know it's important to take tyre pressure when tyres are cold, but I wonder what correction factor the vario pressure systems use before reinflating for road use.

Good webinar, it's a shame we didn't get a proper answer to the plough question. I'd love to know how to get the right pressure in front and back using a weigh bridge. I assume I weigh the front axle with the plough down and then the rear with the plough up? What about my combi drill with front press?

Ironic about his references to load tables and websites. The Bridgestone one is almost nonexistent and makes no reference to VF!!! No useful info at all.

The Bridgestone app is quite good!
Allows you to save your tyre type and sizes as favourites, and yes it does include the VF tyres: both VT and VX.

I must admit I downloaded the app after I posted and yes, it is quite good. I especially like the different pressures for high and low torque applications and the rim info is easy to find as well.

I have heard back from Stephen Lamb now, @Steevo with the following response to your questions:

In regards to the first slide –

"Yes, that is true. I believe the original slides were done this way, to fit/show the tread area only – which natural increases (hence I assume the larger slides) – However I have noticed that the small slide footprint has actually be expanded ? With the lugs being shown larger than the other 2. The actual data of 372.9 / 506.5 / 644.99 is a better representation of trying to show the contact area differentials at different pressures. Sorry for this imagery confusion."

Regarding to the second slide –

"All 3 slides were intended to be of the same width – As stated later. Sorry need to improve on PPP Imagery Skills ?

Hopefully, however the main message – regarding the general shaping of the footprints was fully understood."

Think that clarifies the position now and I am sure that the slides will be updated to be corrected for this for future presentations. Thank you!
