Just googled it! They don't sound too bad.....It seems I am doing the right thing by digging them up now before they flower.

All you need is to practice your golf.
A sand wedge or a Number 8 or 9 iron is ideal for whacking them off at ground level.
It works for sow thistle or spear thistle regardless of stage of growth.
And your neighbours will realise you've finally lost the plot - playing golf without any balls.
