Can anyone point me in the direction of a weed wiper service in the West Midlands ( south Shropshire ) or someone who hires them out we’ve a 5 acre field which this year has just exploded with them, it’s rented and long term pasture so can’t be ploughed up.

how effective versus roundup spot spraying is this? Or do I just hit it with mcpa?

I use mine with roundup, I do find in very heavy crops you get wheel lines due to carry over from the wiper wheels driving over the rush, when on really heavy stuff now I blank the two outside nozzles off, so you only wipe the middle 5 foot or so. I then wait a few hours and do the field again but staggering the previous wheeling if that makes sense? It’s actually quite easy and avoids wheelings , that’s a logic wiper, cheers

What’s the noticeable loss in the crop? That’s just my fear having wheel marks up and down the whole field

If you’ve got scattered odd rushes next to no loss, if you’ve got large dense patches then will get a fair bit of wheel marks exiting the heavy patches, doing like I say will stop all crop loss, any loss either way will soon fill back in at this time of year. It’s a lot worse if done at back end as the stripes will be there all winter, I’ll have a look to see if I’ve got any photos of the bits I’ve done

If you have big mature clumps, it pays to do them one way and then come back and do them the other way next day or whenever.
No they’re not they’re very thin between and vulnerable, neighbours put spuds in next door and I’m sure they’ve shagged the land drains badly they’ve just exploded this year.

The first photo is of a field I did last spring, very heavy hard rush, the second photo is the regrowth this morning, got to wet to do a back end pass last year as it’s swampy ground. About a fivers worth of round up to 20 acres . Cost more in petrol for quad as about 1/2 days work going slow enough to avoid flick back off the rushes. Can’t use behind tractor as ground is always wet

Very nice. If you've ever had to use a spade in rushes, you'll certainly know the difference between hard and soft!

Hard rush are supposed to be a lot harder to kill than soft rush, I’ve found no difference in difficulty other than you get more flick back of chemical on hard rush when they try and stand back up

I’m not sure if it would be too far from you, but Mike Pryce Machinery at Four Crosses hire out a CDAX wiper iirc.

Any idea on price, he’s not too far to go. Just can’t justify 1600.00 to sit in the shed.

i can’t remember as I chose to buy a Chapman wiper instead, but he certainly wasn’t daft money on a day rate.

He did have a couple of secondhand CDAX wipers there too, for a lot less than £1600. I’ve no idea how effective the CDAX wipers are, being a rope wick type, rather than a revolving rotor.:scratchhead:

Cant see it being horrifically ineffective, I want to hit the field with mcpa as well. Just to make sure the rushes are dead. They’re not thickets yet so I doubt they’ll take a lot to kill.
