Weeds in first winter wheat

Unfortunately we never got round to spraying a pre emergence, as it was too wet and we are new to growing wheat so just need some advice.

Will the level of weeds pictured here adversely affect the crop? Do you think the yield potential has been compromised because of them? Should we do anything now or wait until it drys up?

I can’t see any problem weeds in there. The rest that I can identify are not expensive to kill and can wait until March/April when the herbicides will work better and you will be travelling through the crop anyway. Pour yourself a drink and put your feet up!

Looks fantastic. Good plant count/population and the colour and growth stage are good.

No good spraying that now as no herbicide in the world is going to work in near minus Celsius conditions and the weeds aren't growing anyway.

When it dries up in spring you may want to consider rolling it but I suspect that crop is going to motor like fudge the second it feels warm.

Those weeds are all broad leaved weeds that are easy to kill. No good spraying them now even if you could get out and do it as some more salad would only grow by the middle/end of spring.

Whether you spray the weeds out in March or April will depend on how growy it is and the weather- if you can travel you will probably nobble those weeds out and put a blat of fungicide on. Might want some nitrogen by then also, might not. Wait and see. 6 weeks away from anything yet.

Pre-emergence treatment in the autumn or very very early post emergence would have been ideal as you'd have none of those weeds there right now but given the weather we had it's a rude looking crop you have got there considering the conditions we had this autumn.

It’s not even my crop and I feel reassured

I carry my passion wherever I go and inspect crops from the roadside as I drive along! Won't ever leave me and I find myself using similar language in my new vocation as well much to the mirth of basically everyone. You've never met someone get so excited by the level of healing that has taken place to be discovered when someone's plaster comes off.
