Strong single lamb, not happy this morning, reluctant to stand. Have had plenty of cold lambs in the past but this was is hot Given antibiotics. Any ideas?
Antibiotic and probiotic are about as good as it gets with lambs up here. Might have been smacked by a ewe, might have birth defect, disease or might just have had its turn on the rota of near death experiences to wind the farmer up come round and made the most of it. If it had colostrum, is old enough to be vaccinated, wormed and cocci treated and had them then it probably is trying to die just to upset you.
To be honest if we don't know what's up giving the old faithful 5 day dose of pen and strep probably isn't the wisest course of action if the underlying cause is not known but it is a salve to the soul to help think we have done our best. Most causes of lamb mortality would take tissue sampling and a skilled necropsy to get conclusive answers.
One death is inexplicable but sadly not unusual, two together is worrysome and three in short order is time to get one to the nearest vet center that can identify cause.
