One of the funniest things I ever saw on TV was the last 5 mins of "Gardeners World" where 'plant expert' Carol Klein was showing gardeners how to control blanket weed in a garden pond using "A pair of awld tights filled with burly strurr". Only the straw she was actually stuffing into those old tights was wheat straw

Yep that's how we stop the duckpond that we shoot over from turning green, a bale of straw in the inlet creek I think it may be related to "the two Simon's theory"

The EA also use straw bales as a cheap "silt curtain" replacement here when clearing silt from rivers.
