Welding Bucket Edge

I have a grain bucket to do soon, haven’t got the new edge yet. The thing that is bothering me is if welding on one side of the new edge ( which is effectively what you do top middle and top at back ) will cause it to bow as mild steel does when it cools if all the welds are on one side. Will pre heating and spreading the runs out like already mentioned prevent this? Thank you.

@Half Pint brace it flat and spread the runs out so that the heat input from the welding isn't concentrated in one place.

Don't worry if it does distort- a bit of heat from the oxy on the hogging side will soon have things straightened out again.

Thinking when i do mine will leave all the braces holding it flat on until it has cooled fully rather than cutting them off when just finished welding

Thank you @AJR75 and @Massey Ferguson 6480. Would some thing like a 2”x 4” channel tacked across the bottom just behind where the cutting edge welds be suitable for bracing?
I could be wrong as ive never done one, but the braces want to be tack welded to the floor on the inside of the bucket sticking out over where the edge will be then you can clamp the new blade to the underside of the braces so you know the edge is running flat with the bucket and when you start welding these will stop the edge pulling up? Maybe 6 or so braces spaced out across the width of the bucket.

Put 5 on in the last year ! All mig welded .

no pre heating hardest job is cutting old one off.

cut old one off ,put bucket back on machine nice level surface lay the new toe edge on the floor, bring the bucket in measure get angle about right if you’ve cut straight you won’t be far off .

measure off a few pre determined datom points for squareness weld away.

Made a start this afternoon, got old one cut off, cut this one cut off just behind the previous weld as the bucket floor is gettin on the thin side and thought would be easier to cut.New edge was delivered just as i got the old one cut off so got it squared up and a few runs of weld on. Will finish up tomorow.
