Welding Bucket Edge

Hello, got a proforge heat treated bucket edge to weld on to a 7ft 6 grain bucket. Going to use the stick welder for the job and was wanting to check rod type. I am under the impression i want to be using 7018 low hydrogen rods for this? Also any other tips? Going to tack weld plenty of bars off the bucket floor to clamp the edge to to stop it warping etc . Any need to pre heat bucket edge? Thanks

Preheat for sure. If you wear the edges out quickly then I'd consider welding on a predrilled edge so you can use bolt on edges going forwards. Bolt on edges are reversible too so double wear on those As well as being more durable than a weld on edge.

Its a T### of a job but welding new one back on a pleasure.
many years ago I tried cutting the bucket edge off with a grinder and bugered it up so reverted to the gas ax then ran out of gas in a fit of peak and resorted to a chisel for the last six inches it had a 3.5-inch wide blade and I was giving it some gip with the sledge the chisel sprang back out and hit me in the face from just below the nose across my cheek it went through i had to have stitches inside and out

Last couple we've had done they left a strip of the old 1 at the back to give strength and to stop warping it'll be a right pain cutting through a face plate tho

Bolt on every time. We have two now and I wouldn't consider a bucket that isn't bolt on. Lots more strength on the edge and a doddle to put a new edge on. All pros, no cons (except cost)
