Chatted to a bloke today who's been welding for 40 years & always been going on about how "real welders don't need all this namby pamby fancy stuff" - the sort of guy that would often tack weld without a mask just squinty eyes, he went out on a job a week ago where they insisted on him using an air fed mask. All of a sudden he's an evangelist & can't recommend them enough! The two things that really convinced him being that he now wakes up every day without a headache & the amount of crud in the filter on the air pack after a couple of days work scared the crap out him!

I’ve ordered an air fed mask, as you can imagine, there is now a huge waiting list for some models!

I can’t see there’s any other way, unless welding in a dedicated welding area, how can you possibly set up extraction effectively?

Homemade extraction setups could be problematic for MIG welding I fear.
But I am wondering about an extractor for the side of the workshop wall? Difficult not to create too much air movement?

What mask did you go for or who have you dealt with?

We change replace air filters on tractors but I havn't got my own air filter yet(n);)

I’ve ordered an Esab unit, Sentinel A50 Air. I have a standard Sentinel A50, so keeping the same made sense, it’s a nice helmet and I only have to keep one type of lenses, and should the worst happen and one breaks or gets broken, I can get myself going again quickly, that’s my thinking anyway.

I’ve used Engweld, I’ve had a few bits and pieces from them recently, seem a sound firm to deal with. But they are on back order, I knew that when I ordered it, simply a case of getting in line!
Incidentally, Engweld have a discount offer on all air fed helmets at the moment, so worth a look (y)

Thanks for that, I'll get a look!

As someone else said, it's been on the back of my mind but as im not welding every day I didn't bother but the new regs is just the excuse I needed.

Doesn’t everyone close there eyes and tack? I’m still using a hand held mask and holding the welder with one hand, brought a nice speedglas mask which was ok for a while but the solar panel died and now it eats battery’s so I’ve gone back to the mask in one hand

Odd one I always prefer the hand held mask.

I burnt my left hand very badly when I moved to an auto helmet, now I have no idea where my hand-held mask is.

Surely there is some sort of risk assessment allowed here?

It is very different for someone who is a welder as opposed to someone who may do half an hours welding a month?

Quite right, the average Joe who fixes the odd thing here n there is never going to justify having an air fed unit.
Likewise, anyone who is a regular user, will still use a standard helmet for tacking up, or tiny jobs where you are only welding for a few minutes?

That’s what I intend to do anyway, the air fed helmet will come into its own on bigger projects, where everything is fitted up and tacked, and final welding can commence. It’s sensible then to get rigged up with the air fed helmet and crack on in comfort.

I could have got a conversion kit for my Esab A50, but then I’d be committed to using it all the time! So chose to have a second unit.
