I am after a new welding helmet and wondered if a auto darkening one would be beneficial . I know very little on types of helmet so any pointers are welcome .

You got the budget stuff like the 1 in badshots link above or the parweld xr915 i got for under £50
They are fine for occasional to moderate use
My next lid will be a esab a50,can be got for just under £200
Then you got the speedglas etc higher end priced lids but imo the esab will match them

My speedglas one has done over seven years of daily use and been fine. Not the cheapest brand on replacement cover lenses etc, I normally keep an eye open on eBay for them.

R tech has a nice range
The second one up in there range has replaceable batterys
Most of tje cheaper ones dont so if you dont use them for to long the battery goes flat and the mask is scrap

Also make sure you can get spare lens covers for them in my experience these dont last very long and make very difficult when they get scratched most companies will throw a couple of spares in if you ask

Get one with clips on the inside so that additional filters can be fitted.

I didn't realise this until I got a bit more mature and I now find that you can fit magnifying lenses inside so that those with difficulty focusing 'at computer screen distance' (i.e. exactly at welding distance) can carry on welding without wearing trifocal spec safety glasses.

Don't forget that they are weld or solar powered so if left on the shed for a while can need charging. Can get adequate ones for £20. The more you pay the better quality but you are paying progressively more for less improvement each time so it's only worth buying dear of you are going to use it a lot

I've an esab Sentinel A50

Have not regretted spending £200 on a helmet.

The external grinding button is a great idea, and the way it doesn't stick up too much when flipped up is great when you're walking under stuff or in a confined space.

The cover glasses don't last as long as I'd like, but none of them do really.
