What a good Auto darkening helmet for occasional welding, 2- 3 hrs a week total. Old helmets got smashed, thought they'd be quite expensive but see some from £40 screwfix . Want a decent one but ideally no more than £100.

The price of them got cheaper this last few years, but the quality of the cheap units isn't great, £100 is a good budget for occasional use as it should get you more sensors, a bigger screen and a more comfortable headband. The very cheapest masks are slow to react and bad to adjust and you do get what you pay for if you spend the extra cash. I think mine is a Parweld, seems okay around that price. The £40 ones are junk though, I thought one would be okay after a more expensive helmet got left out in the rain, but ended up getting fed up with it and spending a bit more on a replacement before we even managed to kill it.

You do not need to go over £100 for an auto darkening helmet if your budget is sub that, heres are options from a known seller - just ask them (y)

But take note of the ones they recommend

The Esab warrior are good value made by Jackson welding. £60-£80 ish. Don’t buy silly cheap. You only get one set of eyes.

Got this horizon one, £89 very bright and clear when not welding and obviously nice and dark when welding. It also has a grind button so it stays bright then angle grinding

Have two welding helmets here, a 3M 9100XXi FX with full adflo would cost about £1100 today and a Sealey one that cost £34 the other day. Cant see much difference in them colour, shade and performance wise.
Really??

I've had a few cheaper helmets last 1 was a parweld xr915 I think
Now gone to a esab a50 and the difference is night and day to the a50

I have auto helmet which I stopped using because it my eyes bad.. it didn't seem to go dark quick enough
Probably only fraction of second but
Enough
Went back to basic mask and no problem

I bought a £30 one from Screwfix a few weeks ago and I'm happy with it. It's better than what I had before and it's good value for occasional repairs. If I was welding all day, every day I would spend more.

Gys Alien true colour xxl here. Very big screen and like clear glass until it switches. Amazon black friday £50 but £89 at machine mart

I bought one of these to replace a cheap Jackson one, very pleased, much better than the Jackson, and the big screen is great for grinding.
