Hmm, from the article.......
  • Rearing horned (non-disbudded) breeds
  • Rearing non-castrated cattle
.....IMHO, not always a sure way to 'enhance welfare' either of the cattle or those looking after them.

Looks like yet another scheme dreamt up by somebody working from home, keen to justify their job. Like @steveR says, it'd be interesting to see who they've got funding it :unsure:

Hi @steveR Defra are funding this. Defra are looking to develop a voluntary payment scheme to help more livestock farmers improve welfare. To help guide that, they want to learn more about the cost and welfare benefits from farmers already doing this.


Wouldn't it have been better to ask farmers what funding / assistance would be best to help them improve welfare?
You have asked for people to give evidence to support your preconceived position.

True. @Brid @ ADAS said "the cost and welfare benefits from farmers already doing this", with an assumption that there are always benefits from carrying out the practices they appear to describe as welfare friendly....

Maybe I am wrong, and I am jumping to conclusions?

Some of the sheep stuff is also "interesting"...
