Welfare Facilities .....do Farmers even know what they are ?

I`ve worked on a few farms of different sizes as well as having worked in other industries , one thing that stands out on farms is the lack of worker facilities on farms , some did not even have a toilet for staff ! (incidentally this is illegal ), I dont understand how farmers expect workers to be content when they dont offer a room with basic facilities such as a table,chairs, microwave , kettle and fridge and of course somewhere to ***p and wash your hands., remember workers often spend half their lives on the farm.
I guess some farmers conveniently forget that when they have a break and go into their warm comfortable farm house with all mod cons the workers workers are sat on a bale in the cow shed?

What do you offer your workers?

HSE say

"Toilet and welfare facilities in agriculture
If you employ anyone (however short the period) you must provide adequate and appropriate welfare facilities for them while they are at work. ‘Welfare facilities’ include:

  • clean, well-ventilated toilets;
  • wash basins with hot and cold (or warm) running water, soap and towels (or a hand dryer);
  • portable toilet and washing facilities for workers working away from base;
  • changing facilities where special clothing is worn;
  • drinking water; and
  • somewhere to rest and eat meals."

I allow her to go into the farmhouse, just before meal times.:rolleyes:

Used to have a portacabin welfare unit at the home farm, as a bait room & warm handwash (near the lambing shed). Not always possible/worthwhile on many farms though, but always had an outside loo at the farmhouse for use by anyone. When you've got to go, you've got to go.

I`d disagree with that , its always possible and as for being worthwhile I think employees would disagree , toilets/cabins come small enough to be towed by a tractor / 4x4.

You get a bale to sit on :eek:

Luxury :LOL:

When I worked on a local farm there were no breaks at all apart from half an hour for lunch where I ate it in my car.

Toilet breaks required some ingenuity,had quite a polished technique for no.2's.:poop:

Its 2017 now ( many still think we are still in the thirties) , the law states toilets and washing facilities are required , fines for those who dont , and possible claims for constructive dismissal , remember HSE fines are now based on the business turnover not profits .

The £10k fine is in the post...enjoy:)
I neither employ anyone or use contractors.
The builder who was working here said 'A metre of pipe lagging wrapped around the rim of a plaster mixing bucket is very cosy in the back of the van.

Yes, employees need proper facilities, but many farms are one man / person / family bands and this legislation isn't relevant to them as the house facilities are available 24/7.
