Does anyone know why my baler could be randomly making the odd noticeably smaller bale.. The pressure is the same but it's as if the baler is telling the box the bale is done before it actually is? Any ideas would be appreciated... WELGER.. blinking heck

A good few inches smaller. It's the basic control box so I assume farmer (doesn't say on the baler)

The bale on the top is an example

If it was just a few inches I'd say changeable crop or netting a bale when you're turning round the end when it's still needing more crop to get to size especially with a basic model as you've no idea of bale size other than on the front of the baler but that looks like a big difference so I'm not sure

Thanks. I did wonder if it was a lumpy crop of short barley straw tripping it. I'm not quite sure myself

Do you stop when the box beeps, or do you watch the dial on the front of the baler and slow down as the bale reaches size? There is quite a delay between the bale reaching size, the beeper going off then you actually stopping. I would suggest the little bales are the size the baler is actually set at. You'll get them when you pull out at the end, often a bounce will set off the box, or when in a thin bout.

Yep stop when the box beeps. Actually that bale in the pic was on a thin headland swath can that cause it?. I may try looking at the pointer more than the box. I diddnt know if the cable at the side was oversensative

It's not really a case of causing it, the small bale is the size of bale the baler is set at, everything else is over big if you get me. If you were to go really slowly every bale would be that size. You soon get a feel for when the bale will be the right size if you watch the dial for a bit. I just go like f**k glance at the dial a couple of times then cruise to a halt as the needle reaches the size, you might have to adjust the size bigger to get the size you want.

If you put the "n" in the vice and straighten it back in to an "l" it should work ok then :D

A few years since I've used a Welger, are you sure it's not rough ground or maybe a loose connection that is triggering buzzer

It's a trait I'm afraid, of the combination of swath size & speed. My 545 has vicious brakes and I often get oval bales where I've suddenly stopped feeding in.

I had a 520 master before this 545 farmer and I'm sure the master was less prone. The farmer (basic BCE handset) is just a switch when it gets (or bounces) to size; the master has a potentiometer to monitor the increasing size for the display. I wonder if it also pre-empts how fast the bale is growing and takes that into account. That would be smart, but would need a camera out front to take into account forthcoming headland turn to be really wizzy.

Right. after cleaning the little plastic wheels off, turning the knife (odd netting problems) and adjusting the sensor using a feeler gauge I went and baled 180 bales yesterday, the delay between the box and bale size indicator seems a lot lot shorter, I even had to increase the bale size to get the right size.
It seems as was mentioned that the small ones were where the baler was set and the bigger ones were made by the delay in the beeper.
Anyhow it went lovely I diddnt even have to get off my fat rse to fiddle about with it......bliss.
Thanks for your advice guys really appreciated.

One of the welger belt balers worst features is uneven bale size. We have run them since 2003 and they have all been like this. My brother has a v160 and he thinks it is better. Had to use my 445 a few weeks back when his broke down and he said they are night and day. It’s very frustrating I find when you are baling hay and want to make perfect 4x4 bales for the customer, with the best of wills and taking your time you still end up with some 3ft 9 bales where you run out the end of swath just as the buzzer goes and similar if you take in just a wee bit too much you throw a 4”2 bale. I find hay the worst as generally have the pressure backed right off and the bale size fills so quick. I find running 100% soft centre but higher outside pressure (if you can) helps and if you happen to notice your going to run out of swath switch the net to manual until you have made the turn.

Working on manual and going to the same point on the gauge works but not ideal.
On the 160's the sensor is on the density arm rather than down the side. The wire rope is purely for the gauge on the front now.

I have a 345 and have same with bale size, previous baler was a nh br740 it had a large control box with large display counting up bale size and was far better you would know when the buzzer was going to go off so could stop quicker
