Welsh NVZ

I just asked the silage contractor how his customers were going to cope with the upcoming NVZ rules. We will be fine here, as organic we are below the Nitrogen level, and cattle are in cubicles as well as loose housed, so I think slurry pit capacity will be fine, however, he said if a large percentage of his customers had to invest in further capacity, they would rather just give up.

Just like we had to do,when nvz came around here back-in 1997 work around them.
so I started to talk to farmers about starting to do top dressing muck on cereals in the spring , so we
could spread in spring and autumn and still get it all spread.
As they say it’s all history how ,as very one doing it now.

I think one issue is, the N limit in Wales is less than England. Then the average age of a Welsh Farmer is 60, and to suddenly go up in months of slurry storage involves a large investment in storage, which older farmers don't want to do. On all grass farms here, not quite as easy as spread the muck twice in a year.
