I have trouble with it also . Stale seedbeds don't seem to make much difference as it always seems to have an even later second germination post drilling .
Would ploughing it down work as I really don't want brassica's in the covers ?

I used to plough our covers year on year, the problem was always there, I’ve been strip till for a few years and it hasn’t improved or got worse, only places I’ve got rid of it are where I’ve moved the covers, not ideal at all but cleaned one up for a few years and one other is still clean. Gatekeeper thinks it might come in with millet seed, binned off millet for the last few years, only had it this year as I tried that Jack Russell mix so I could try pendinmethalin pre em, no millet made it this year but the bloody BYG did!

I’ll ask Bright Seeds when I next see them. Who do you buy your seed from? Bartholomews?

Ploughing won't do for it In my experience. Could put kale in and use alternative products. Also maize or beet. Nicosulfuron or Maister does for it but timing has to be good. Not sure PDM bothers it at all but does get the crop away nicely.

I use Kings Seeds @Brisel . My covers are a mix of Sorghum and Millet so that could be where its come in from although you would think that it would be cleaned fairly easily out of both of those seeds .
I min till my covers which is why I wondered about ploughing .
Would maize give many more herbicide options than Sorghum as they are a very similar plant ?

Maize has more herbicide options as it is a major grain crop.

Do not spray sorghum or millet with nicosulfuron as it kills it dead.

I had a big problem with BYG in game covers. I've found ploughing doesnt do any good at reducing it. The only solution I've found is utopia a kale/rape hybrid. BYG is so late germinating a normal stale seed bed ahead of maize, sorghum or millet is a waste of time as it doesnt grow soon enough. I plough work down and roll my cover plots then in early July spray with round up and then sow utopia. This has cleaned them up a treat and I now rotate utopia with maize ect just to keep ontop of it.

Interesting I have seen BYG growing in sweetcorn at a local farm shop. They've never grown any type of cover or any millet, or sorghum ect and the sweetcorn is on a very wide rotation so it would seem it came in the maize seed which doesnt seem feasible.

You need some MTZ and a graminicde in your life. I had a serious outbreak of ye olde barn yarde grass in some potatoes once, drop of laser killed it like napalm!

Data from the US suggests these actives control barnyardgrass. I don't know what rates, and obviously this is not a recommendation, and it depends on the crop
